Pardner SB1 refinish?
« on: June 05, 2010, 03:34:55 PM »
I have  a New England Firearms Pardner SB1 12 gauge 3.5 inch chamber. The stock is black and the paint will scratch off with your fingernail revealing what appears to be a light colored material. My question is in the stock wood or some type of plastic? I would like to take the paint off and refinish the stock but am concerned it might not be. Anyone know?

If it were a synthetic stock it wouldn't be painted from the factory so chances are real good that it is wood. Sometimes you find really nice wood under the factory finish. Heres a pic of the stock on my Tracker II 20ga.

You have wood under there so go ahead and strip it down and refinish it, you'll be happy with the outcome.

Here's one I did:

What finish did you use on that stock? The stock I posted is 3 coats of BLO and 4 coats of polyurathane but I want to try something a little darker on the next one.

I used a water based rosewood stain as a base coat with an oil based walnut stain on top of that and then I used around 12 coats of Tru-Oil to cover it.

Do you mean to tell me that they covered up that nice piece of wood at the factory?

Yeah it had the factory stain on it when I got it. you could see it had the makings of a great stock through that stain but it didn't  do it justice. i have refinished all my pallet wood handi's except my 1940 H&R model 1900 12ga. Here is another pic of the Tracker

I would argue that many pieces of wood people consider "flawed" are some of the best pieces out there. I saw a show once where they made a cabinet out of mesquite. It was some peices you wouldnt even think would work. It had big splits in it. They filled it with a black epoxy filler and then finished it with a glossy urethane finish and it looked amazing.
