can you make .280 brass from .30-06 or .270 brass?

yes but the shoulder is a bit farther ahead on a 280 to insure it wont chamber in a 270. So the first time after sizeing in a 280 die i like to use a fairly mild load to fire form it. then after fireforming make sure you check the overal lenght.

Yes, but I recommend 30-06 Springfield brass over 270 Winchester, since the larger bore will allow a better false shoulder.  If you make it with the 270 Winchester then you may want to seat the bullet out to the rifling with a medium fire forming load.

I agree with Lloyd Smale.

If you neck up like it would be if you used the 270 Winchester brass you will not have a false shoulder, so seating the bullet to engage with the rifling is the only way to create this false shoulder for head spacing.

Having used both '06 cases and 270 cases to make 280 Remingtons I prefer the 270 cases.  Yes, forming them involves one additional but not difficult step.  That step is is simply to lube the inside of the case neck and run over a .30 cal expander ball before sizing and forming the new shoulder in the 280 Rem die.  '06 cases will be a little short whereas .270 cases are the same AOL as 280 cases.  Not much of a difference though but I like the case neck to fit the chamber neck.  When fire forming I also seated the bullets out to fit hard into the rifling along with the crush fit of the newly formed shoulder.  With this and a mid range load of 4895 gave perfectly fire formed cases and a pleasant practice load.  I had as long case life with the Remington 270 cases as with Remington 280 cases.

Not the question you asked, but I've made 280 Ackley cases by fireforming.  My best shoulders are achieved with normal loads.

I took a piece of 5/16" drill rod, which measures .3125" diameter, and made a long tapered expanding "ball" on my lathe.  I put this into my .30/06 sizing die to neck .270 Winchester cases up to .3125".  I then run the necked-up cases into my .280 sizing die to create the false shoulder on the neck.

This approach gives both the correct case length and also gives plenty of area for a good false shoulder.

However, since .280 brass is available from Remington and Winchester, I'd prefer to use factory brass since it has the correct head stamp.
