A little experience in frontier type life might be interesting and helpful to some that can revert back to it, but hard on urban dwellers who is used to government aid.

Funny you say that almtnman ... my wife and I finished up my "hurricane" shopping list yesterday, and I asked her if there's anything special she wanted to throw in to enjoy just in case. She said, "no, because if I have to start getting used to living this way chances are its probably for the long term so I may as well just make the transition." She's an urban dweller that followed her husband to the horn of africa and managed just fine - some folks just don't know what they're capable of until its required of them.

... or in an airplane ... we can't pick where we are when bad things happen. Just hope for the best, and plan for the worst.

I think the long walk from home is going to be the most likely for a LOT of folks, many of whom may have done a good job of preparing their home for a long term recovery scenario.

I think airplanes are EMP shielded, because they get hit by lightning more often than you think.

Even if your plane is unaffected the airport tower won't have any radio or radar to guide you. That might just be a problem, not every plane but how many would it take to foul a runway?

Gee, maybe I'll have to ground my old wood cook stove, kerosene lamps and candles too. I thought about faraday cages for a radio, but where I am, reception is so so anyway. The steel roof is grounded now, hope that helps. My 1954 Farmall tractor should still run, but what happens when the gas is gone?

If you have a modern day diesel tractor, it should not be affected as they don't have all the electronics in them.

Friend you better check that out , All diesel tractors since the 80's have had "added" electronics . Esay way to tell is if there is no pull cable to kill engine . As example my New Holland has a Jap motor and German ignition . Yea I didn't know they had ignition either. Some say its so big brother can shut ya down but they sure are better on fuel .............

Shootall, if that's the case then you might want to park yours like I do inside an all metal building and ground it with the attachments or a ground cable. Mine is grounded at 2 points, the attachment on rear and the front end loader on front and confined inside a grounded all metal barn. Your vehicle that you plan on using after the fact can also be grounded with a chain dragging either off the trailer hitch or attached to the frame underneath out of sight. Or if you have room enough inside the all metal building, you could keep a G.O.O.D. vehicle parked inside there with the tractor.

It would take more than a building and remember in the case of aircraft induced EMP it could be done time and again.

If you are gonna ground your tractor do it with only one ground rod. If you have more than one ground you run into problems with differing potential and increase your risk of damage.

Mine stays in there all the time unless I'm using it and hope that the SHTF doesn't happen while I am.

Another interesting thing other than the EMP is they are predicting a heavy solar flare cycle sometime in the short time future which will cause about as much damage to stuff as the EMP. While reading about solar flares and faraday cages I found an interesting item there that they say a automobile frame is basically a faraday cage of it's own if properly grounded.

From what I have found out, the automobile can be grounded with a piece of wire and a spike to push into the ground. Wire attached to the frame somewhere. That is when it is parked near ground. I also heard you can make a Faraday cage with chicken wire in your attic and ground it outside or under your house. All inside electronics would be protected as long as they are not plugged up. The feds are supposed to spend several hundred million or billion to make the electric grid safe from EMP's. A moving car may be at risk. Some people are letting a wire drag the ground to on their cars or vehicle while moving, but that is a problem with sparks or getting pulled over.

National Geographic has a show about this coming on tonight at 6:00 pm it's called Electronic Armageddon. I hope there is some good info, but some of their stuff is more fairy tale than science at times.

It wasn't too bad of a show. I did have to laugh about the group of guys working on protecting the internet, that should be useful with no computers or electicity. I guess the goverment will still be able to use it.

  This just isn't true... NOT ALL newer diesel tractors have circut boards in them, or "added" electronics! I bought two new ones in the 90's that don't...

  Even if a tractor doesn't have a pull cable to stop it, all you have to do in manually pull the rod on the injection pump, to let it work at pumping fuel, so it would start. That won't work on every modern tractor, but it will work on MANY of them. It's the ones with electronic injection pumps, that will be in trouble.

  Anyway, i would not like to have to live through an EMP problem, but i could. My tractor could be roll started, and then i could pull my diesel pu. BUT, where would i be going??? Even my gen set would work, but why would i need it?

  Life would be rougher without those conviences, but i don't HAVE to have them.

I watched this show last night. It didn't offer solutions at all, except that the military is prepared. I think they said only 1 out of 10 cars could be knocked out. I would like to hear that again to verify. Maybe they figure some cars would be in parking garages or in home garages or something. However, not brought out in the show is that congress recently approved $100 million to protect the electric grid from damage. Internet providers are building Faraday cages around their mainframe computers. The biggest problem they saw was the electric surge from all the power lines sending too much voltage over the lines, burning out transformers, and going into homes and businesses and burning out their computers and electrical appliances.

Only way I see to protect yourself is: 1) Make your house a Faraday cage and ground the wire or metal roof. 2) Unplug or buy expensive surge protectors for your appliances and computers. 3) Ground your vehicles when not in use. 4) Or buy old vehicles using points, condensers, and carburators. 5) Buy older diesels without electronics. 6) Have a grounded backup generator. 7) Have a large storage of food and water or a water purification system.

Have a rural place where you can live off the land.

They did say things could get desperate after 3 days in the large cities with no water and food. They said large cities only have a 3 day supply of food at any one time. They rely on the distribution system of automated food processing plants, vehicle transportation, and refrigeration. If all three are down, there will be a mass exodus to the countryside in search of water and food. Sewage will get backed up etc. Disease and death will be massive. So the further you get from a large city the better. If people have to walk somewhere, it will take them days which only takes 30 minutes or an hour by vehicle now. The strong, gangs, etc, will take any vehicle that runs, and steal any food or guns the city folks have. If they do take a running vehicle and make it to the country, you and your country neighbors will have to fight these guys off.

The size of the surge is related to the size of the EMP, and the length of the cable over which it travels as it multiplies over distance. It also travels faster than the relay can trip in any surge protector or UPS. Our government consistently underestimates effects, because everything is tied to budget. The American people would freak out if we needed a billion dollars in protection, and we only spent 100 million. But all we have is 100 million (more like 82 I think), so we scale the problem down to match the money - we only have a 100 million dollar problem, and by golly we spent what we needed to solve it! Hurrah, vote for me! Meanwhile, back in reality, we should've prepared for the billion dollar problem. Of course, its a suckers bet too. When the billion dollar issue hits, no one will remember how we underestimated. We'll just send a team of lawyers to solve it.

Yep, so the goal for me is to find a piece of land as remote as I can possibly afford. Live off grid. Use a steam engine to run electrical appliances. Make a Faraday cage around everything electical as possible (metal roof, some type of grid like chicken wire in the attic, or so, and ground it). Use firewood, excessive insulation, buy dried food, can your own food, use gas appliances where possible, like cooktop. Even with electronic ignition, you can light them with a match. Wood stove for cooking and/or heating. Store oil for lanterns. Just be prepared. Also, be prepared to defend it. Know your neighbors.
