Anyone try this using Bh-209?
« on: June 07, 2010, 06:26:30 PM »
I notice my breechplug fouling after just a few shots with BH-209.  I was wondering if snapping off a few primers might help after every few shots.  Any comments?

I have never had a problem with my T/C Pro Hunter speed breech. Since switching to BH209 just load and shoot. I've shot as many as 20 loads in a single outing.

i've noticed certain 209s foul more than others.  perhaps the fouling in your plug could be from the primer instead of the bh209?

I shot my first full jug in two range trips in 2 Knight rifles... no problems with breech plug at all... as matter of fact easiest removal I've ever had... I do use Lehigh conversion breech plugs... only fouling is carbon which is easily removed by soaking in regular gun solvent(they looked brand new).  Perhaps you have some black powder lube that is fouling.. BH doesn't like that; from what I've heard.

I've found B209(and/or the CCIM primer) still leave some residue around. Though this fouling is easier to deal with than that of Pryodex or 777. The best part is you can set your gun aside for a day or 2 on a hunt & not worry about it after shooting. A hunt is usually a few shot or less event. If shooting a bunch at the range I would plan to clean that day. I have had no problems going several(5+) shots over a few days & not cleaning, not even a patch through. After this it still cleans up fine with Hoppes #9. I think I'll get another jug of B209 next time I see it near $30.

I have also done the Gen II Lehigh BP conversion on my Knight. My limited testing with it has shown a much cleaner area behind the primer.

Rebal, This Lehigh conversion is very specific for certain Knight M-Ls. There may be something for a CVA, but I don't know. I would clean out your BP hole well with a 'welding tip cleaner' or something similar. I don't fire primers only for any reason, besides limited testing. I just start off bone dry when gearing up for a hunt. If you have BP issues with your CVA the guys at modernmuzzleloader.com may have some tips.

My plug is almost plugged up at base after 5 shot string.   Please explain lehigh BP conversion.  Available with CVA Wolf?  Thanks.

i tried a cva kodiak that had its breech plug fitted with the Lehigh liner, it was dirtier than the original plug. I tried it in both a cva accura and a cva kodiak pro.  Grease or breech plug tape, filthy! And that was shooting blackhorn209.

i have a wolf a few years old, modified the plugs for 32s&w short with small rifle primers, and drilled and tapped for a vent liner.  never shot bh209 and at the price per 10oz i never will unless somebody gives me a jug, so i can't comment on ignition with that but i suspect it wouldn't be an issue
