FoX Ridge 300 Whisper ???
« on: December 23, 2002, 08:26:09 AM »
I thought the  Whisper was a SSK patented name.  I just left the T/C Costom Shop site and they have the barrel for sale and it is listed as a 300 Whisper.  What is the difference between the SSK and the Fox Ridge barrel

I think it is the twist rate SSK's twist rate is 1 in 8 T/C Custom Shop is 1 in 10.The 1 in 8 twist will shoot the 200gr and up better I think anyway I may be wrong.

T/C has an agreement with SSK to use the Whisper name on their barrels.  The above posters are correct..T/C Custom Shop barrels have a 1-10" twist.

300 Whisper--SSK vs T/C
« Reply #4 on: December 23, 2002, 11:13:59 AM »
Oldman, This is just mainly to add some to the previous posts. Being somewhat "picky," but although SSK has a "trademark" on the "300 Whisper" (at least in my Hornady Handbook, 5th Ed is has the "TM" sign on the 300 Whisper....), but I don't think he actually has a patent on it. The 300 Whisper is one of many "proprietary" rounds JD has developed. According to the same Hornady Handbook (in describing the 309 JDJ), "'Proprietary' here means that Jones has maintained control over reamers developed to chamber these cartridges and neither sells, permits, nor licenses others to do so on their behalf." Consequently, JD has given T/C his permission to sell 300 Whisper barrels. The other guys are right in that the usual 300 Whisper barrel from SSK has a different twist than does the T/C barrel. This makes the SSK barrel more suitable for the heavy bullets/subsonic loads sometimes used in the 300 Whisper. Of course, the barrels are different also in that the SSK barrel will be a Shilen whereas the T/C barrel is basically a factory barrel.   Gary T.
