America's Top Shot (History channel)
« on: June 08, 2010, 05:36:15 PM »
Has anyone seen the new show about america's top shot yet?

They competed with a Russian SVT-40 Tokarev,  a 1903 springfield, a russian mosin and an M14.

It was funny to see some couldn't adapt and shoot these older weapons.  I know with the longer shots the wind was a big factor too.  But there's no excuse about the shorter distance shots.

Next week its the handgun competition. (sunday nite)

Forgive me i'm no pro but i'll sure raise hell with the 100yd "X".

I could understand somewhat but me with my kids old BB gun at 25yds + i could throw a rock with better aim than the BB gun.

Saw it this evening. Funny didn't see anyone adjusting the sights on any of the rifles in the first segment. Think they ganged up on the youngest guy and he proved himself by getting the three targets at the end. Frank

Excellent show.  A lot of it has to do with your spotter.

One day I was at the range, and this real old man, heck, he must've been 60 :D, with his equally aged wife were shooting a Sharps.  She spotted and called. he pulled the trigger, and wow could they team up.

The spotter should get equal credit when working as a team.

Yup your right most of them couldn't spot.

We'll see what happens on sundaynite. This young buck just may spank everyone in the end.  Remember its youth plus he's a good shooter.  Plus its easy to get frustrated too.  With distance and wind its guessing the kentucky windage too.

Spanky, think the guy that spent 30 rounds trying to hit the target should have maned up and left rather than trying to get the youngest member to be the scapegoat. Jeeze I'm 63 with cataracts and with my 03a3 50yds would have been a snap. Those targets were not exactly little ones to begin with. Watch out for the young guy. Frank

I think it was over confidence(big head) and he got frustrated with taking so many shots and missing.  Then he went after the kid to save his butt and the kid came thru.  I think he was all over the place because he forgot about his breathing, he just lost it after 50 shots.

I'm a rout'n for the kid to take it all.  If he was on the US team he has to be a decent shot.

Honestly have not been impressed with any of them.
And they are supposed to be the top of the game?
The kid will probably come out on top, he maintains his concentration

put Tom Knapp and Jerry Miculek on the show if you want to see some shooting. No one here impresses me terribly. I've seen Bob Munden hit balloons with a snubbie further than that clown was missing a pie plate with that bolt gun!

I don't like the reality show vibe of this show. Too much drama and scripted dialogue.

I think it is cool that they have such a diversity of weapons. It's easy to master 1, but long bow to sniper rifle will keep anyone honest.

I have to agree. It has that whole "unreality show" vibe. You know its going to end up between Kelly and JJ.

It makes sense that no one would stand out, except at their specialty. The young kid (Kelly I think his name is) seems to really be on the ball though. He seems to have natural talent but more than that seems to understand the importance of discipline and technique,at least in the three I episodes I saw. Essentially, the recurring theme with handguns and bows was,the instructor tells him what to do,and he does exactly that, and performs credibly. Its disappointing that we didn't get to see much of him with long guns, but in the challenge, his experience and skill showed. One thing I noticed was that the red team seems to be getting all the camera time. Its all about them and you hardly see the blue team. I guess they put all the idiots that think they are gods gift to marksmanship on the same team, needed one more to fill it and said, hey, lets put this kid here too,he will add some variety.

I have to say, that challenge between the guy that allways whines about his equipment (its not like they don't all use the SAME equipment,in fact,in the pistol competition which he SHOULD have done well in,everyone used the same gun.so who cares if the sights were worn, everyone was handicapped the same) and the idiot who couldn't get over a dumb-ass it was sort of a let down because your happy whoever is gone. Honestly, part of being an adult is knowing that sometimes,no matter how much someone rubs you the wrong way,you just have to shut up and live with it because maybe they are the bosses son,or maybe they just have skills that you really need. It doesn't matter. Someone who was the more mature of the two would have realized that the real payback would have been winning the $100K. Honestly though, few of those people seem to have the mental discipline to be truly exceptional at anything.

I couldn't see how someone could shoot 30 times at the target and not hit it and then think that he was there strongest competitor. He sucked, I could of done better than that and I am not even close to a competive  shooter.

LOL Ive talked to dozens of people who could miss the target 30 times and still think they are gods gift to shooting sports. Of course they are not on tv in a shooting contest.

I am quite sure that I could miss 30 times . . . if I tried real hard.

But in his defense, I've shot some rifles that were just hard to get on paper.  But then again, if it hit at 50, it should at 100.  Maybe he was taking a completely different sight picture from the 50yd shooter.  I don't know.  I can see how it would be hard with an untested rifle if you started at 100, but after hitting at 50, it shouldn't be that hard. . . but then again, I wasn't there.

Who says that 03 could shoot?  What was the target - 6" - difficult enough to see at 100 m but could the rifle group 6" at 100m.  Possibly when they tried it previously the shot was 'off' enough so that it actually hit the target but when properly aimed couldn't group.  I've shot Garands that simply could not group under 8" at 100m so who sez this ancient 03 could group????

Thats true. While you would hope that the producers would have the common sense to check the rifles to make sure that at least the two different rifles used by the two teams were about the same in accuracy, there's no telling if they did. You would also THINK that someone would mention it to the producers, since at least you expect the guy who specialized in old military guns to be aware of this, but again, who knows.

I gotcha beat torpedoman.  ;D  I haven't watched any of any episode.  I listened to them talk about it at work and could tell survivor wasn't for me.  I may be boring and predictable, but at least my life has very little drama.  I try to keep it that way.

Of course, most of TV isn't for me.  I don't have cable (by choice) but I use my DVD player for my Netflix and I stream documentaries and stuff over the internet.

I do not have any TV reception and wont pay for cable.  Every time I think maybe I will I go over my Brothers house and watch his cable shows all 200 channels and really find it hard to see anything I want to watch.  I do what DVD and also show on the internet occasionally.  I do hate reality shows because they are not "Reality" and I find them boring as well.  I do know how to shoot though I have never been a top competitor I am good enough to impress most of the people who shoot at my club.  I did make Master class in High Power rifle and have won a few medals in other rifle matches but I usually end up in the middle of the pack score wise.  To me a six inch plate at 100 meters is dead meat every time with iron sights and also dead meat out to 600 meters with a good scoped rifle every time.  But then I have seen guys who would shoot a 300 yard group in the middle of the X ring using iron sights and a bolt action and firing 10 shots in 60 seconds that you could litterally cover with a 50 cent piece (not me I am happy to fire 9 out of 10 in the 10 and X ring with a flyer in the 9 ring.

I can honestly say I never watched an episode of survivor, I did like The Alaska Experiment, though I thought season 1 was better than season 2

I can honestly say that i never watched any episode of any "reality" junk and that i watched half of an episode of "top-shot "until i realized that it was not a documentary. It took me so long because i had a hard day and had fallen asleep.
No cable and no cell phone. Every time i stay in a hotel and watch the cable TV for an hour or so i realize that Public TV (3 channels) and the library are all i want. Sometimes we rent DVDs.

The Brit took the $100,000 home. It was a very close finish however as the other finalist was but one shot away from winning and it was just a matter of who could hit that 300 yard target with iron sights first.

There were a few shooters on this show, some of which probably were out of form from the tv cameras and hoopla around them.  Then there were a few that I wonder how they got there.......maybe to make the others look better and keep the show interesting?

It's hard to know how much of this is real, and how much is made for tv.

I was a little sceptical at first as some seemed to not shoot well. But did enjoy watching the series, and there was a lot of interesting style competitions. I also agree that it would be hard to maintain focus and form with a bunch of filming crew running around all the time.
Thanks Don.

It wasn't a bad series. It was interesting to watch them shoot all those old guns, and fun to see the Mosin make several appearances. The one thing that really bugged me was that I went up to the history channels site to see the episode I missed last night an hour or so before the show. They already had it posted who won,in a way that was unavoidable. That really sucked. Ruined any hint of suspense when you already know the outcome. I understand that they are doing a second season. Time for all the arm chair quarterbacks to put their money where their mouth is.  ;D

One thing I WOULD like to see is a little more history. I feel that the history channel really is getting away from what it supposed to be about sometimes. I would like to see for instance, when the Mosin Nagant is introduced rather than the brief discussion, they could do a 15 minute piece on its history and perhaps its most notable uses, then on to the competition. Sort of add a little bit more of an educational aspect to it.

Agree that it would be nice to see more history on the pieces. I did apply for season 2. The picks for the tryouts should be out by end of month. Did any other armchair sharpshooters here send in? Heck couldn't pass a chance to burn some one elses ammo in a bunch of cool ole guns.
Thanks Don.

I sure would have liked to, but I don't have the "creds" anymore.  I have not shot competitive since the late 60's.  I'll just sit back and critique! ;D
