Keeping minnows alive
« on: June 09, 2010, 02:50:12 PM »
I'm trying to find a way to keep minnows alive at my dock even when the water gets warmer.  Thought about making some sort of live box that I can put next to the dock and just take out a day's supply when I go fishing on the boat.  The water is about 3' deep there.  Anyone come up with a solution to this problem?  It's a long drive to the bait store.

Make a rabbit wire box with a trap door, and hang it off your dock. If there are minnows in the lake buy a minnow trap and keep it bated with dog food, and catch your own minnows.

Dee,
I've tried all kinds of bait in my minnow trap with no luck, and there are minnows around the dock.  I have tried the usual bread, dog food, cat food and even some fish food.  I'm thinking about making some doughball and trying that.  Catching them in the minnow trap would solve all my problems.

I've had guys tell me that minnow traps just do not work in lakes like they do in streams.

I've been usin'em all my life in lakes. My grandpa made minnow traps out of fruit jars and screen wire and would just lay them in shallow water. He put milo in them. Some folks call it maize. Try maize or crushed corn. Raw oatmeal will work sometimes too.

I think grain would come out through the holes of the screen in the trap I bought.  How do you keep it in there?

Bird seed bags. You can go to the store and buy bags you can hang from tree limbs or porches, that are pre packed with bird seed. Birds like small finches will land on them and pick the seed out thru the pours of the bag. These you can use in your wire minnow trap.
When my grandfather used maize he was using minnow traps made from screen wire and quart fruit jars, and the outer ring of the lid. Very effective in lakes, and free. The Cherokee were poor but, resourceful. It's the little things that might keep one fed, and my grandfathers children didn't have pocket money but, they never went hungry.
It's like making fire with a couple of sticks. When you first try, it seems impossible, but you keep at it, until you figure out the concept. Then you have fire anytime you want it in under a minute.
Keep asking question of any and everyone, and you will eventually hit a combination that will work for you. Minnows in a lake, are like minnows in a stream. They both have to eat, and neither is smarter than the other. You just have to figure out what make yours tick, and you'll never have to buy bait again.
I'll keep thinking and you keep tryin, and we both might learn somethin.

By the way, grasshoppers are in season here, along with crickets and earth worms. Throw a few of each into your trap. I don't know of any kind of fish that will turn any one of the three down.

My pop would put them in a live trough and keep them with a little water running through it. He said  they toughened up a lot by doing that, would live longer. He would put some ice and an asprin in his bait bucket when he headed fishing. He also used the trough to flush out off flavor fish. eddiegjr

Let your trap sit on the bottom and load with crackers ( they take a while to break up)also some bacon if crawfish are around . To keep them a wire box hanging on the pier but have a top you can open instead of thaking out of the water .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
