New place to hunt, need some advice
« on: June 09, 2010, 04:37:47 PM »
Hello fellow Hoosiers,
I'm sure you have all noticed that I am extremely busy these days. Work keeps me away from home more than not.

I have been given permission to bow hunt in-town and need some advice.  The plot of land is 55 acres. It is farmed by someone that lives close to me. It has a strip of trees, lining the creek, running through the middle of it. On both sides of the creek are the crop fields. There seems to be a small woodlot on the North end of the property, but I'm not certain it is apart of the same plot. Deer have been spotted back in the field just after the crops were harvested.  According to the farmer, there is a fair amount of deer sign back there.  I will try to post a Google maps photo for you to look over.  I know the deer have limited cover and food, but I'm not sure if it is enough cover to bed down in and stay close to.   I live less than 1 mile away from here and plan to walk there and check things out this weekend.

Lemme know whatcha think.

PS: I opened the attachment with Adobe Reader 9.3

Thanks, Dinny

I would say they would have plenty of places to bed down there. With a water supply and food close why would they go anywhere else except maybe to hunt for other does.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking too. :)

  No problem.
My woods borders a corn field and in my back yard on the wood line we have about a 1/2 acre pond. Deer are always running back there and bedding year round.

I pulled this place up on Google Earth and sure enough, it ain't far from the Holiday Inn Express I've spent a few nights in.  Certainly will be in town huntin.  As far as places to bed down there should be plenty since most of those homes to the west are 3 bedroom or more.   :o
Looks like a good place to hole up early mornin or late evenin and wait em out up in the north west corner.  Good luck!

BTW, this place isn't too far from the liquor store where the big shootout took place 3 or 4 years ago.  Watch out for competition.

To me it sounds like a natural travel corridor through the fields. I don't know how big the trees are as far as putting up a tree stand, but it seems like you have a good spot that has possibilities. You need to do some preseason scouting of the place. At this time of year the crops aren't too high to see deer movement, especially early and late in the day....

I have alot to do this weekend, but will try real hard to get over there and look for sign.  Maybe Sunday morning before church. Maybe my wife will let me keep my camo on.  ;D :D

Considering the area, this is the deer sign you should be looking for.   ;D

Looks good so far. I am talking with a guy over towards Marengo? who has several acres he just bought. He dont hunt and the land has not been hunted in many years. Open pasture type property, with a tree line and creek at the back. The other side of the tree line is a field. I have permission to hunt it, now to just get over and have a look.

What are you feeding the little critters?

Creek bottoms make great corridors if the terrain is low enough. Look for the prevailing winds and set up accordingly. If there are any trees of good size and cover that are along the creek sides, that would make a great place. You should find several routes where the deer are either crossing the creek bed or straddeling the creek side. Sometimes one can setup a terrific blind along the creek bottoms. Their going into those fields at night to feed and lay in the corn all day. When the corn goes down, forest areas or low spots will be their only cover for bedding during daylight hours. If you go into that woods be careful. If they are using it for bedding down after the corn comes down.....I would be hesitant to setup in the woods. Good luck.
