Hogs spotted at Rock Bridge
« on: June 10, 2010, 04:05:41 AM »
I was out walking with my son last night and ran into two big hogs. They ran off pretty quick and luckily they did'nt charge us. I plan on going out tonight to try and find them  ;D
Has anyone else seen hogs in this area?

Do you think tha's enough power to knock one of those down? I know you said they are quick but im pretty quick myself  ;)
What do you use.

Bobcat,

If you don't mind me askin', what county is Rock Bridge?  I tried to go to Zaleski St. Forest to look for pigs a few weeks ago but weather and family issues intervened.  I've got a 18.5" 45/70 that would love to put some cast lead in a nice hog.  Backup is a 1911, modified to shoot 45 Super, 200 grain @ 1260 FPS.

thanks

tom, rockbridge is in hocking county, the town is right off 33 (valero gas station) but the mailing zip encompasses a large area, dang near to old mans cave/st.rt.374.  north and a little west of zal.

(i can't beleive you wouldn't take the 120, poor neglected gun why don't you let me take care of her for awhile?) ;D

John,

You might need a gunbearer to tote the 45/120 around.  It is at 11 pounds right now and I am going to up it a bit by adding a bipod, different stock set with more weight.  Going to get it to around 14 pounds.  Unless Bison start migrating through NW Ohio the 45/120 is just a paper puncher.

Thanks for the Hocking Co. geography lesson,  I remember seeing signs for Rockbridge now that you have prompted my memory.

Here's a thought, I am staying in a cabin near Zaleski for gun season.  Will be down the day after Thanksgiving.  If you know of a range nearby could bring the 45/120 and punch a little paper.  Get the shoulder loosened up for opening morning. :P

Isn't there a range at Zaleski?  It seems to me I see one when I drive through there.  Maybe for handguns only?  There is a 100 yard range at Strouds Run in Athens, but it is small and once someone is on it, a person can wait all day to get a chance to shoot.  Usually in the morning it's open, though.

WH,

The range @ Zaleski is approx. 25 yards and there is a big sign stating no centerfire rifles.   I shot my 45 and fed mosquitos there last month. ;D

You know it probably isn't a very great idea to go to range open to the public 2 days before the opener of gun season.  Probably have a bunch of rookies out there trying to sight in their brand new WallyWorld deer killers.  I shot at the DNR range @ Delaware last year and the RO was actually enforcing the rules.  The year before I was there and it was mostly do what you want.  I asked him why the change at the range and apparently someone with zero gun experience purchased an AK47, went to Delaware and proceeding to violate every rule of gun safety.  Least no one was shot.

Below is a link to Ohio DNR's "Allowable Hunting Equipment".  No center fire rifles for whitetail, but you can use a centerfire for gray squirrel?!

Yeah, but the rules and regs booklets indicate you can only use rimfire rifles and airguns for squirrel on any land controlled by ODNR???

There were two pigs shot in athen county last deer gun season. They were shot just off of 50/32 between athens and new marshfield. There were 5 in the group and the guy shot 2 of them. They were on a deer drive when the hogs busted out of the thick stuff. The guys figured they followed the railroad bed out of vinton county over to athens county.

The only centerfire rifle prohibition I have found is from Oct 15th to Jan 1st in OHio Wildlife Areas, not state forests.  IF there are other prohibitions please post a link or enough info. I can find them.

thanks
