One of the GIs that took over one of my old Bear Baiting sites took his kids and went up there last weekend. They drove up Friday night, hauled 100lbs of dog food into the location. They refilled the barrels, then climbed up into the tree house to spend the night. That is when they noticed the MREs they had left in the tree house were gone. He thought some one had visited the site and eaten the food. Next morning well after sunup, they are awakened by a big Cinnamon Black Bear eating their bait. Him and his boys were so engrossed with watching the bear, and getting it on camera, no one thought of picking up a bow and taking a shot. The Bear looked up at the tree house, and suddenly ran over and started climbing. They started yelling and screaming trying to get a bow out of a case, but the bear came on anyway. The Bear climbed right up the ladder and into the tree house with them. Since they had not been able to get bows, and arrows togeather, they had no choice but to go over the rails(been there, done that myself) and climbed out on limbs. Bear went straight to the new MREs they had brought and had a feast. When done the Bear climbed down and left.
Things settled down and they were thinking of going back to the truck and having breakfast in the camper when a Grizzly came in. Now when a Grizzly comes in on a bait it usually don't leave till there is nothing left. That could be a couple of days. After watching the Grizzly eat for about 20 minutes they decide to run it off. They start yelling and screaming. The Grizzly makes a run at the tree they are in and starts tearing everything up within reach. After a while the Grizz goes back to feeding at the bait. One of the kids pulls out a blunt that they use to shoot rabbits and shoots the Grizzly in the rear. Grizz just roars and spinns around and takes it's revenge out on the arrow. As it is doing that it keeps looking up at the tree house. Now everyone is beginning to get scared. One kid though is getting mad. Without anyone noticing he pulled out another blunt. He takes aim and shoots the Grizz right behind the ear. This time Grizzly was kind of stunned. It sat down for a few seconds, and kept shaiking it's head. Then it got mad. It tore the barrel open, ripped down the buckets of jello on trees around the site. Then it started charging the tree. After a couple of hours it went away. The young GI grabbed his boys and left in a big hurry. They were scared half to death on the way back to their truck, kept thinking they would see the Grizzly any second all the way there. Since it is an archery area he did not think to bring a gun along. Think they are done with the bate site for the year.
