What are your plans for hunting this Fall in Arkansas?
« on: June 12, 2010, 03:19:43 PM »
:) Howdy! I know it is Summer; however, the hunting season in Arkansas will be here before long. Have you planted or tended any food plots? Practiced with your bow or crossbow? What are looking forward to hunting? Deer, bear, waterfowl? Always, Gene

Well, I deployed Feb. 17th, and I was still bow hunting up until about 5 days before I left. Not much I can do while deployed, so I am working on my fitness. I get home late August, and will break the bow out. I also have a new .308 to get sighted in, along with checking zero on all my other rifles, and ML. I plan on getting out to where I hunt shortly after Labor Day, and mowing and tilling it up to plant a fall food plot. Other than that, I am just dreaming about hunting until I get home.

I hope to open up dove season but have a son getting married on Labor day week-end.  Since I don't know if I will be in Jonesboro or Bentonville when it opens, all I know is I'll have my gun and license with me, just in case.  I'll probably be like the guys in "Grumpy old Men" on the day of the wedding.  Never tried to swing a shotgun in a tux but I'll bet I can.   I sure hope they don't turn any white doves loose at the wedding or it will really be a shotgun wedding.  I know there's no limit on eurasian doves, how about them white ones?

I'll be going for deer again in the modern gun season.  I also just put in for a muzzleloader permit so if I'm fortunate enough to get one I'll do that too.

My son has been building me a new tower stand for deer hunting to put on the place here, I just hope all these Gas Drilling operations are thru B-4 the season starts!!   I have seen a drop in deer sighting this summer and I believe it is due to the extra people, noise, and road traffic in the area.   Jim

Went down to my lease today to spray Roundup on my food plots. Going to get them fertilized and disked in about ten days. We found that if we plant too early, the danged hogs will root them up before the deer get a chance at them. >:(
We are planning an organised hog hunting weekend in August. Maybe we can thin them out some.

I'll be hunting at Shirrey Bay-Rainey Brake, has anybody hunted there?

Permits? We don't need no stinkin' permits down here! I will be on vacation for the first M/L season. Then again for the first month of modern gun season. Wife thinks I MIGHT get my belly full of deer huntin' by then! ;D

Any luck guys? I hunted 3 times with my ML, and could not get a shot at the one doe I saw in range. I missed a 10 point with my bow. Most of my hunting has been with the bow this year. My normal hunting spot, was logged off, and fraced with natural gas wells. Got permission to take the son to a new place for the youth hunt this weekend, so we are going to check it out.

Good luck to your kiddo this weekend. I took a big doe on the last Saturday of M/L season. Sure is eatin' good! When I leave work the 11th I will be going to our hunting club (6000 ac on NE side of Lake Erling), and don't have to go back to work 'til Dec. 1.
I set up a stand on the corner of a 20 acre rectangle that was logged (thinned, not cleared) where I have a 1/4 mile shot to the East. I took my Rem. 280 cal rifle to my friend's farm to see what it did at 400 + yards. I managed to get a 4 1/2" group after shooting about 18 rounds, so will try a shot if "Big Boy" walks out.

Any of you Arkansas types know of a good outfitter that has hogs for reasonable costs?

I did pretty well last weekend, I managed to shoot a button on Saturday morning, right around 100 lbs or so.  I should get him back from the processor by mid-week.
I heard a great deal of gunfire on Saturday morning, but maybe around three shots all day Sunday.  Nobody else in my group got anything, so I feel extremely fortunate.
Next weekend I'll be in the same area for modern gun season, I'll be sure to post how I do.
