How to turn brass black?

Most cold blue's will turn bare brass black, tuit' suite.

Caveat: Most factory's coat their brass furniture with clear lacquer, which must first be removed for any sort of color change to occur before you're ready for the dirt nap.

Would it hurt to blacken rifle brass? I load .22 hornet for two rigs; 10 inch T.C. and a 799 Remington. I have been thinking about blackening the brass for the T.C. to help me id. it easily. Also would the blackening wear off in a tumbler, or scratch off and perhaps ruin a die?

Just use a red "Sharpie" to put a ring around the brass.  It stays on pretty well.  Simple and quick.

Just practice with the rifle.  Shoot about once a month and the brass will be black in about 6 months.

Solid brass doesn't rust, since it contains no steel/iron, it just tarnishes - another way of saying "discolor" or change appearance - when it comes in contact with various agents.
That's why it's had naval use for centuries.

When "rusted" brass is seen, what is actually seen is the rusting of a non-brass base metal that had been brass plated.
The green "verdigris", seen from brass' prolonged leather contact, is a surface growth.

I'm building a Lyman pistol kit and used Birchwood Casey Perma Blue on the brass trigger guard. After the fourth application the brass looked silver. I lightly wiped it with 0000 steel wool which gave the brass an aged/tarnished look.  Not black but much better than the bright new brass look IMO. Thanks for the tip on the cold blue guys!

Funny thing about Birchwood Casey, I've found the Perma Blue works better on brass and the Brass Black works better on steel. However, they both wear off rather quickly.

Dipping in to a solution of Liver of Sulfur - available from jeweler's suppliers - will turn brass black in short order.
