Went to the range today
« on: June 12, 2010, 06:39:03 PM »
I went to the range today to do some testing with my reloads for my Contender. With my super 14 30-30 barrel awsom groups of 3/4 inch at 100yrds with 125 grain Seirra on top of 33 grains of IMR 3031.... With my super 14 223rem groups of 1 inch with 50grain V-max on top of 24.5 grains of IMR 3031 and 4 to 5 inch groups with both at 200 yards. I am very pleased on how accurate these guns are. Been reading alot on here about them and finally got me one and now can't wait to get out and shoot something with it.

Best thing out of the trip to the range today was shortly after I got there 2 guys came in and started blasting away with AR's so I left the range with 300 pieces of once fired 223 RP headstamp brass they left behind.

I just love NON-Reloaders that come to the range and leave me all their hard earned money laying all over the ground.   ;D

You will love that 30-30 for deer hunting. The first Contender I ever had was a 10" 30-30 win. It really liked IMR-4198 and Sierra 125 and 135 SSP & 150 gr Hornady RNSP bullets. I used to win money of fellows out shooting their rifles at 100 yards with it. I now have a 14" MGM SS 30-30AI that I just started working with and it shoots under an inch at 100 yards with about anything you put in it. IMR 4198 seems to be the powder with 125 Nosler ballistic tips for it also.

I had a 14" 223 barrel also and it really liked the 50 gr Sierra Blitz bullet and AA2230. It would mess up a groundhog.

If you have some IMR4198 or plan to use some in that 30-30 barrel, I would also suggest trying it in the .223, I was doing some load testing for my 15" .223 barrel and tried Varget, IMR4198, & IMR 4895.  The barrel really liked the 4198 with a 100 yrd. group of .352", it almost stacked them on top of each other, and it was a middle of the road load by the speer #14 manual.  I too was using Horn. Vmax 50gr. bullets.

I was using 125 Balistic Tips and was getting 2 to 3 inch groups all i did was switch to the Seirra's and instantly they was touching.
I may try that in my 223 cause the groups there just won't touch yet.

Try shooting the 125 ballistic tip loaded at different over all lengths. They usually shoot really well somewhere between touching the lands and 20 thousands off. The Sierra is a good bullet though. It usually tolerates jumping a ways to the lands pretty good. The ballistic tip will fly a little flatter at longer ranges and retain it's velocity better.
