6.5tcu/7mm tcu
« on: June 13, 2010, 07:20:12 AM »
hey all,

I have a chance to buy a few 14" barrels the 6.5 tcu and 7mm tcu what would could they be used to hunt?  I dont shoot any comps and dont plan on it.  I hunt and that is what they would be used for.  I already have a 30/30 AI and I have a 357 max and 22mag in the works.  plan on getting a 223 also so I don't see a place where these fit in but I could be wrong so tell me do they have a purpose for hunting?

thanks
carl

As you know 6.5 and 7mm TCU are 223 cases necked up.
I have a friend that swears by 7mm TCU and shoot sillohuets with one out of a 10" barrel.
I know you are not going to shoot targets with it.
But if you look at shooting 120 to 130 grain bullets out of each of the 6.5, 7mm, and the 30-30 you are looking at similar speeds the bullet just gets thinner and longer.
Other than that you are talking about .264 , 284, and 308 bullet diameters.
about .02 /.204 of an inch apart.
If you get them for a good deal you may stick $10 on them and offer them for sale here.
I have a 223 barrel on my T/C and it is a great medium game / varmint gun.
With lighter bullet weights the 6.5 or the 7mm can do what the 223 can.

Carl,

Both the 7mm and 6.5mm are well suited for deer hunting and pig hunting. If you can get them for 130.00 +/- it is a good deal and will serve you well. Even if you do not use them, you can sell them here for 150.00 +/- and put the profit into your existing calibers.

carl, I have a 14" 6.5 TCU and its the most accurate barrel I own.  Its a factory bull barrel.  I can ring the 200 yds gong at our range with boring regularity.  I have never killed a head of game with it, but will carry it this year.  I does very well with 120 BT's.

I have not personally used my 7mm TCU for deer, but I've got a buddy that swears by his out to 150 yards.  Says he loads the 130 grainers and has never had one leave the field.  I would think the same would be true with the heavier 6.5mm bullets in the 6.5 TCU.  My 7mm TCU is boringly accurate with almost any projectile and powder combo!

If you have a 30-30AI barrel already and want a 223 barrel I would pass on the 6.5 & 7 tcu and take the money and get the 223 barrel. The 30-30AI will do anything in the hunting field better than either of those tcu will. Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree with shot1.  I try to fill needs with my barrels.  I think you will be well served with your .223 barrel.  No real need for either of these.

Both the 6.5 & 7MM TCU's will take deer size game, both are usually very accurate. I have a 6.5TCU and really like it. I never hunt it because like you I have a way better choice for deer in my 30-30IMP, 357Max, 6.5JDJ. With what barrels you list you have in my opinion there are two slots you need to fill. Looks like you need a .224cal., such as a .223, .222, 22Hornet. You list a 22Mag but I still see room for a 22L.R., cheap to play with. Also may want to consider a 17MACH2, also cheap to shoot and extremely accurate.

I can guarantee you that the 7mm TCU with 140grn flat base Sierra's will kill a 200lb hog graveyard dead. I've
proven that 10 or 12 times.

I have owned both 10" and 14" 7 TC/U's and a 10" 6.5 TC/U for many years, used as Silhouette guns.
For hunting use, I agree that the .30-30 AI will outperform those, and unless you just want to try them, I would recommend spending your money on a .223 and a .22LR.

Im thinking more like a 22, 223, AND 6/6.5/7mm TCUs....  ;)
Snag that elusive 257 TCU too...  Make sure you get the dies with it!
