Is this bolt normal?
« on: June 14, 2010, 01:38:30 PM »
I bought a used 111 in 30-06. When I bought it I checked that all the controls worked properly as best I could. Now that I'm cleaning it, I find that the Front Baffle and the Rear Baffle Assembly both rotate 360 degrees around the bolt body. Is this normal, or do I have trouble? Thanks for your help.

No, I don't believe that's normal.  I checked mine and the bolt head remains locked in place, aligned with the bolt.  The front baffle is free to revolve around the bolt.

I'd suspect that you don't have the bolt head head retaining pin, which should lock the bolt head in place.

The schematic for the rifle, along with parts numbers, is here.

Hmmm.  I never noticed that!  I've never tried to turn the rear baffle (part #28), but it turns freely around the bolt.

Live and learn.

If your Model 111 is like mine, it's going to like a number of loads, powders and bullets.  My current load is a nearly full charge of Reloder 19 and a 150 Nosler BT.    It shoots into 3/4 of an inch.  I haven't chrony'd it yet, but intend to sometime this week.  It also like 165 GameKings and IMR 895, along with Hornady 155 A-Max and Reloder 22.  There's lots to like about that rifle.
