REM. H&R, NEF
« on: June 14, 2010, 06:25:48 PM »
I have seen on some other forums that the bean counters who bought Marlin, H&R and NEF have moved production to the Rem. facilities and are sending out barrels that are poorly made and even dangerous.
Is it no longer a good bet to send an action in to have a barrel fitted, is the next step to have the barrels made in China?
Oh, my!

Hi Don!

Remington closed Gardner the end of 2008 and moved production to their Ilion NY facility. Marlin makes H&R's barrels, has for several years, sometime this year H&R will start making their own barrels in Ilion NY. While there were some hicups in the getting the new facility up and running, most everyone is happy with their products and service, see the Ilion satisfaction poll in the FAQs. Cost wise, whether it's wise to get a new barrel fitted as opposed to fitting your own second hand barrel, many here choose the latter, but getting accessory barrels is still a viable option, they're just more expensive now with the higher fitting and shipping charges, plus paying tax on top of the cost of the barrel itself, about $160 for an average centerfire rifle barrel when all is said and done.

I hope and pray Remington never exports Handi production.  When I got my first Handi, the .45-70, I sent the frame in for 3 more barrels.  Since then, I fitted those barrels to their own frames, and just finished fitting a 7mm-08 barrel to a 1995 frame.  It locked up perfectly, just needed a slight shave on the latch shelf.  I guess I've fitted about eight or nine now without any problems.  Personally, having done it both ways, I believe buying barrels on this forum is the better way to go.....time and cost wise.
