Just read a review of the Edge
« on: June 15, 2010, 11:43:38 AM »
Turns out it's alot of gun for 300 bucks. They tested a 243 and used 11 different kinds of ammo. The worst groups were 1.75" and the best were just under .75" at 100 yds. 9 out of the 11 types of ammo tested shot at 1" or just under. that's pretty consistent shooting from a cheap rifle with no mods at all.
I posted something in the H&R forum a while back about buying one of the Stevens/ Savages over a Handi and got beat on a little for it. The guy who was defending the handi's the most has a full on custom 30-06 handi with all the bells and whistles and it don't shoot as good as this bargain Savage... go figure.
I've got a Stevens 200 in 22-250 and it shoots just like the test rifle here... they're great rifles for the money.

I don't have the Edge, but a new Cabela's special Savage in .243 with Accutrigger.
I like my handis, but reloading for it is "an exercise in frustration", with the Savage its "which sub MOA load do I want to shoot?
Got:
Handi VP 22/410, 410, 20, 17M2, .223, 357MAX, 50cal ML SS w/MU plug

Spanky,

I read the post you were talking about a few days ago, and I have to side with you. Most people I know are going to buy a bolt action over a single shot any day of the week, if they are similar in price. I have a Savage 116 I bought 15 years ago on clearance, and paid just over $250 for it. I bought a Marlin XS7 after Christmas for $255. The cheapest I can find a new Handi for is $279.

i've posted this before and i'll post it again, i love my edge in .243 the group in the picture measures 3/8" center to center. shot with winchester silver box 80 grn. this was not a fluke or luck. this gun easily shoots 1/2" or better with cheap rem or win ammo, i only shot one group with the fed blue box and group was a little bigger, 1 1/2" i think, i have a couple boxes laying around so i might give them another chance. anyhow this gun is hard to beat accuracy wise, regardless of price.
I'm just a bitter Christian clinging to my gun.

My .223 Edge just came in today. I am going to pick it up at dinner. I also checked out the new Redfield Revolution scope 4x12x40. It looks nice and I really like the Accurange reticle and the fact that it doesn't have adj objective. It is only ten bucks more than the Bushnell elite 3200 3x9x40 that I was going to get. Plus it has a lifetime warranty. Probably will pick it up too.

I don't know anything about the Edge, but I have a long admiring relationship with Savage rifles and I consider them some of the most accurate, most innovative rifles made today.  Absolutely wonderful by any standard.  Innovations like the Accutrigger and the AccuStock are making the entire industry re-thinK their manufacturing methods.  We've got four Savage rifles in the family.  Two standard sporters and two heavy barrel rifles and each of them is capable of under-MOA accuracy with a variety of ammunition.

I've got Handi's too, and I see the appeal of a single shot rifle that needs a little tinkering, but I have to agree that the Savage rifles offer a magnificent opportunity for the average guy to own a superbly accurate bolt action rifle.  Like all rifles, the Savages tend to like particular ammo types and each rifle is a question unto itself.  The quest for a superbly accurate rifle is inherent in all riflemen and part of the appeal is searching for that one magic load that makes an average rifle into something wonderful.

It's hard to argue with the success that Savage has in making accurate rifles.  When I want to whack things very far away, I look to my .243 Savage 10.

I ordered an Edge in .308 and I have a Stevens 200 in .223, along with lots of Handi's as well. While I love single shots, especially for hunting, you can't beat the out of box accuracy of the Savage/Stevens rifles for damn near the same price.  ;)

I got to put my hands on the new EDGE today. I was totally impressed with it's smooth handling. Also liked the oversized safety and the smaller pistol grip. Hard to beat this rifle for the $299 price tage. From what I have read, she is a MOA, out of the box. Wish I had never touched it!!!! ;D  Gonna have to sell some more blood and start picking up cans along the roadway. I knew I should have never pulled into that candy store.

I too read the review in Guns & Ammo on the Edge, the more I read the more I convinced myself I needed another Savage, A locale gun shop had the Edge new in the Black stock for $259.99. Great price for a rifle, how ever, after some research I bought another Stevens 200 in 22-250, My reasoning boiled down to three things, One I bought the 200 last year in 308 camo stock and love it, secondly the 200 as well as the Edge have stiff trigger pulls, the 200 is an easy fix, lighter spring, the Edge has a different trigger group, I read a post on another form about a fix, but seemed much to elaborate for most of us, And thirdly, I just did not like the look or feel of the Edge, some do, But for the money I don’t think you could buy a better rifle than the Edge for the money

I picked mine up yesterday and I really like the feel and handling of it. I mounted the new Redfield Revolution 4x12x40, but I may have to redo the mounts. With the 2 pc bases you need to have a scope with a long tube for mounting because the bases are too far apart. The Redfield just barely fits with no room for forward or rearward adjustment. Plus the rear ring covers up my power setting numbers. It is too far forward for my liking so I may have to order the 1 pc base from EGW. Still going to try and shoot it this weekend and see how it does.

In the wide universe, there's nothing longer than a Savage action.  I normally use extended bases and Redfield extended rings to give me the maximum adjustment for my eye relief.  If you call customer service at Brownell's they're really good about recommending the correct base/ring combo for your particular rifle.

I have Savage 200s in 223 and 308 both shoot MOA or better with factory ammo. I had a Savage 10FP heavy barrel in 223 pre accu trigger and the Stevens shot just as well. I traded the 10FP for a 45-70 handi plus some cash. I figured why carry a 12 lbs rifle when I can carry a 6 lbs rifle that shoots just as well. I am thinking about an edge in 7mm-08. I had a handi in 7mm-08 and could get it to shoot better than about 3.5" at 100 yards. I also like the drop box magazine on the edge over the internal box on the Stevens 200

As Paw Paw said Savage doesn’t give you much room for mounting scopes, I have 4 Savages 110 an 11 and two Stevens 200s, I use only Nikon scopes lately, 3 are short action Rifles , 223, 22-250, and 308, the Nikons fit theses Rifles with standard bases, but the 4th is 270 long action, And I needed to use a step back base. But even with the short action Rifles and Nikon 3 X 9 X 40 and Weaver rings and bases, you have less than a ¼ inch of lateral travel

hornady  If you use the weaver 402 base in stead of 46 I think that should solve the problem for the edge and the other savage long actions as long as the receiver is round not flat Lorne

Here is a pic of my new .223 Edge with the Redfield 4x12x40 scope. I can use it as is but will probably change the bases out later. I finally got to shoot it Sunday in the 95 degree heat. It shoots pretty good, with 4 different factory loads it shot groups from 1" to 2" at 100 yards. I think the biggest hold back on accuracy is the hard trigger pull. It feels like 8-10 pounds. All of my groups were spread out horizontally. Several groups would have 2 bullets in 1 hole with the 3rd one out to the right. I am going to work on the trigger and see what I can do. Any way I really like the look and feel of this rifle. I think it will shoot a lot better when I get the trigger done.

Looks good, I have a 2 savages & 1 stevens, 10fp 223, 12 VLP 22-250 1:9  They are both sub moa & so far anything I put in the 22-250 is soa & I only have tried 69gr SMK & 68 hornady hpbt's

The sevens short action I lightened the trigger got a 250 savage barrel from midway - reamed to 250 savage AI put it on a new stock & mounted a compact 2-7 leuopld on a EGW base, just finishe fire forming brass.

Interested in the new edge, can you switch barrels like the other savages, if not that would be the only draw back for me

I think the barrel is switchable as it uses the same style of barrel nut attatchment. The trigger is non adjustable but I honed mine and the pull is probably half what it was. Rifle Basix is now making the SAV-1 to fit the Edge also.

Handi may be a Dandy, Iown one in 223. But I will put my dollars on the savage. years ago Savage was not my first choice in a rifle, but today is a different story. Thier new CEO has turned the company around and now they produce one of the most accurate rifle out of the box today, Remington use to hold that title. I now own two savage rifles an F class in 6BR right stiff out of the pocket book for the average joe. But worth the bucks, and a savage I am building from scratch. At the range I see some shooting dime groups at 100. my advise look into a Savage at a really good price and accuracy second tot none. Lou

I have had my Stevens .223 for quite sometime now. As the fella on this topic mentioned something about cheap ammo, the Brown Bear in 62 grain HP shoots the best out of this particular barrel. It shoots ragged holes at 100 yards if I stay still and do my part. That's setting my rifle on a 2 1/2 ft. ladder, using my wife's kneeling pad from gardening to rest my rifle on and an old boat cushion to put my right knee on. I didn't care for the stock, so I sanded off all the mold marks and used Krylon's plastic spray paint. Use it in steps and it will harden just fine. I have had no problems with the paint not staying on the stock. For a touch of class, I topped it off with some gold powder from Brownells to help stand out the Stevens Model 200 logo and where it was made. USA! And to add more American flavor to my rifle, the new American made Revolution scope replaced my foreign made mistake of a scope. I also installed a Rifle Basix trigger to this rifle and with everything that I have done with my Steven's, I couldn't be happier. Savage makes great products and you have to love a company that has stayed where they belong.......built proud right here in America!

I had to do the same on my Savage 110 (.30-06).  It's wearing a Millet Buck Silver 3x9x40scope, and it just wouldn't fit the standard bases.  Ended up getting a set of Warnes extended steel bases and it's fine though.  At first having the mount overhang worried me that it'd bend and change POI, but it's held steady for 7 years now (I only use that rifle for hunting - each year when I pull it out for a test shot before season starts it's always pegged exactly where it did the year before).  Given that some people use aluminum extended bases with no issues, I've gradually lost concern about the solid steel ones bending.

I have a new Edge Camo in 22-250 - It's true what they say - every load combination tried shoots into 3/8 in at 100yds. What a rifle! Put a 79.95 Simmons 6x18 side focus scope on it and it is fantastic. My shooting eye is bad and that side focus really works for me. Its clearer for me than  my leupold VXII. The trigger was a world class lawyers trigger, put a Rifle Basix SAV-1 on it and man is that a sweet trigger. This thing shoots circles around my 1200 dollar Ruger and is much lighter too. How can you beat that?

Man, I'm really leaning toward getting an Edge in 223

As for the Handi/Savage thing, I think that the debate comes from the two being about the best deal on new guns in their type.  Hard to get more bolt gun for your money than a Savage, and it's hard to get more single shot for your dollar than the Handi.  Both being such solid values, you're going to get those who love one or the other beyond the call of rationality.  It's to be expected.  I like singles and I like bolt actions.  There are those who swear that a bolt action is the only gun to hunt with, that guy will favor the Savage in it's price range.  Other's claim that a single shot is the be-all end-all of shooting purity.  That one's going to be a Handi-man.

The Edge and the Handi don't fill the same niche.  One is suited for rimless cartridges and the other isn't.

i like the stevens 200 much more than the edge. it is an accurate rifle and it is compatable with other savage rifles' parts should you need a stock, trigger, etc
every day is a gift. use it well
