Need Some 44 Mag Factory Ammo Help
« on: June 16, 2010, 01:40:48 AM »
Hello All! I'm new to this site, joined a couple days ago!
I have ordered a SP1-S44 and it should be here tomorrow. My plans are to use this rifle to deer hunt in Indiana this coming fall.

I have a couple questions about these rifles concerning ammo.

First what do they tend to prefer in factory loads?

Any suggestions on deer hunting loads would be appreciated?

And is ammo from like Buffalo Bore and Cor Bon ok in these rifles or are they too hot for these SP1 framed rifles?

Thanks
Rob

My .44 Handi (now .445 Super) is on a SB2 frame.  It's an older overbored barrel, but, it always shot Hornady LEs very well.  Now that I'm reloading, I'm not shooting them very often.  I think they'd be safe on a SB1 frame, but Tim or someone will come along and verify that.  I wish they gave us the option of paying extra for SB2 frames; then you'd be good to go with any rifle barrel they make.  I finally have all my rifles on their own SB2 frames.

Welcome Rob!! Make that an SB1-S44.  ;) BB ammo will be fine, it's still loaded to SAAMI specs, they have this note in their product detail.

I also live in Indiana (franklin county) and have used the .44 the past two seasons. My handi really is not too particular about loads. In my area, 100 yd shots are a long one and just about any load will do the job. As stated the WWB 240 grain loads will do just fine. I also tried some 240 grain xtp and they worked ok too. But to be honest some 240 grain lead cast bullets I reloaded worked just as well. I have 7 deer to fall to the handi in the past two seasons. None went over 20 yards. You will love it. Good luck.

Hey, Rob,

I have a 44 but have always hand loaded for it. My response is just to welcome a fellow Hoosier to the boards. I live in Indy.

fellow hoosier myself, adams co., i just got my .44 mag handi a couple months ago and love it.  everything i have fed it has been real accurate, considering i have a red dot on mine.  i was impressed with the way it handled a few different loads.  planning on loading up some home brews to see if it gets better... enjoy!  brian

My old 44 shoots pretty good and it ain't too picky about what I feed it. I usually shoot 240gr. bullets of some make or another.
I think it would knock the heck out of a deer. there are some places that sell 300 and 320gr. ammo for 'em... that would be bad medicine for big game.

Thanks Everyone! My rifles in but I couldn't go get it as I was in the hayfields all day. Way behind due to the weather. It rained about everyday and now the suns shining so I'm making hay! 18 acres down, 122 Acres to go!

As soon as it rains I'll go get my rifle. I'm personal friends with the gunshop owner and he knows whats up on my end so its no biggie!

Good to hear they don't seem to picky on what you feed them! thanks again! :)
