Browning BAR Comparison
« on: June 16, 2010, 05:45:34 PM »
Looking at a lightweight 7mm or 300 WSM Browning BAR, either the Shorttrac or the Lightweight Stalker.  Anyone ever compare these?  Price is about the same.   Tx!

9x23w;

Sir, I had a Browning in 300 WSM and it was one of the worst guns I ever had.  The recoil is about the same as a regular 300 Win Mag and it was too much for the attached magazine in the Browning.  Would your magazine hinge from the bottom of the gun, or is this a fully detachable magazine?  Mine hinged from the bottom of the gun.  Maybe a fully detachable mag would have acted differently, but the recoil from a shot would dislodge the next round from the hinged magazine and, of course, the gun would misfeed.  Very annoying.  I got rid of it and got a Winchester Model 70 bolt action in 300 Win Mag and I am pleased as pudding with it.  Kept the Zeiss scope that was on the Browning, though.  It was sweet!  Sincerely, Kanilure

 I have a lightweight 'Stalker' in 308 & a wood stocked regular BAR in 243. I like them both, no problems.

Have you considered other auto's??

I had a remington 06 semi auto and as far as semi auto's go nothing can match my new russian saiga in 308win when it comes to spitting out rounds.  Even with surplus ammo and iron sites it can shoot 1 1/2" groups @ 100yds if i do my part.

I have a BAR Safari in 338 Win Mag and the recoil is much less than my A-Bolt 338. It is very close the the Bolt as far as accuracy too. Have had NO problems with either. The only drawback for the BAR is the weight. It is heavier than the bolt so if I know I will be hiking in a long way, I'll take the A-Bolt.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

My old scoped Belg.Port 270 BAR weighs over 9#.   Maybe that's why they invented the "Light" series.   BTW, mine works perfect with all my handloads and it shoots tighter than my Remington semi-autos.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

If weight is important to you then weigh the rifles yourself before choosing. Don't trust the weights that Browning states. The Shortrac that I checked out weighed the same as the Longtrac, 6lb 12 oz.
