500 s&w
« on: June 16, 2010, 07:06:48 PM »
Hi guys, I just got a 500 s&w. I'm thinking about getting the barrel cut down to 16". I'm just wondering if anyone else has done this and if so what results did you get. Thanks Jason

I'm sure it'd still be pretty potent as it is a handgun round. The muzzle blast would probably be substantial.

Don't know but a good friend of mine from here just sold me his barrel and some nice sights( Thanks BB ),and I am looking forward to finally get one and shoot it. I like the velocity increase the longer barrel offers for this BA pistol cartridge, and really appreciate the chance to try it out.

I passed on the one at my local gun shop. He still has it with a pallet wood stock and fiber optic sights for $159.00. It is used but looks brand new. The gun shop is in southwest Indiana.

I'd grab it and part it out if I wasn't happy with it.  Ya gotta be able to make a hundred bucks on it.

Just had my barrel cut to 16.5" and drilled and tapped for a leupold m8 eer scout scope and a necg barrel band sling stud installed.  Also cut the stock to youth dimensions and installed a pachmyr decellerator pad.  Bobbed forend about 2.5" and reshaped.  Sprayed the funiture with brownells spray grit.  Now just trying to find the time to duracoat the rest.  I have 50 rounds loaded up with cast performance 440gr WFNGCs that i expect to be around 1800 fps.  To answer your question, yes ive done just what your thinking but havent had the chance to test it all out yet.  ;) I figured the .500 would be the best candidate for the short barrel cause it normally operates in a 8.5" barrel anyhow.  Long as i get minute-of-hog accuracy to about 80 yards or so, Im happy.

Is the 500 S&W frame an SB-1 or an SB-2?

I've gotta believe it's gonna be on a SB2.  The only ones they're currently putting on SB1s are the .357 and .44.  Of course, it could have been put together with mismatched serial numbers.

SB2, a SAAMI loaded 500S&W round would destroy an SB1 frame and possibly the shooter holding it, the SAAMI MAP for the 500S&W is 60kpsi with operating pressures of current data up to 53kpsi. As Pete said, the only centerfire rifle barrels available on SB1 frames are 357 and 44mags, the 44mag has a SAAMI MAP of 40kpsi.

I have been up and down on accuracy with mine, but I finally ended up cutting the barrel back to about 17 inches.  I saw some test data that showed that you really don't gain anything beyond about 16.5 inches.  If I can find that link again, I will be happy to post it.  I had so much trouble crowning my barrel (which seems to be constructed funny) that I just put a well polished flat crown on the gun.  I put it in synthetic stocks and it shoots pretty good groups at 50 yards.  I was getting 2 nearly touching and one off to the side and a little high.  Have not had time to take it to the range with the chrony yet - too many irons in the fire.  With that short barrel and synthetics, it is one hard-kickin' lightweight little bruiser.  I am sure it would stop a good sized hog or just about anything else you are likely to come across in its tracks!

Well, either I am mistaken/misremembering (is that a word?), but here is a link for some other pistol cartridges from 18 inches on down.  It's complicated.  Seems to depend on bullet weight/type as well as caliber.  Some of the larger bores actually lose velocity beyond about 16 inches in some combinations.  Then again, these guys are just shooting and chronographing a whole bunch of factory ammo.  Handloading with the often longer handi rifle chamber, you could probably get a bit more powder in there-and I have yet to find any data using somewhat slower powders that might take advantage of a longer barrel.  I am not brave enough to go charging into that territory.  I need to chrony some loads.  Someone on one forum reported a 400 fps increase at 16" over a 4" 500 Smith pistol barrel.  Anyway, the trend for big bore pistol calibers seems to be diminishing returns beyond 12 inches and certainly beyond 16 inches - at least with factory ammo.

That sounds right to me. Due to limitations in case capacity , you could not put in enough slower powder to use the increase in barrel length. I have had trouble finding much load data for the 500, it all seems to be for people trying to reach max. If I needed that I would get a rifle cartridge. I am using 50/70 load data and it seems to be working fine. If it would go through a buffalo, what more do I need??  I use Blue dot,2400 and xmp5744, and I think they would all burn completely in an 18" barrel. I have to get a friend to chrony some loads, but I am trying to get  an accurate 440 FNGC load between 1200 & 1400 fps. Incidentally, just 12 grains of unique will put that bullet through 3 treated landscape timbers, that is 10 inches of pine, and leaves your shoulder smiling.
