sometimes the conversation turns negative and brings nothing positive to the site.
sometimes it is over concern bad advice/unsafe advice is being given.
sometimes it is because they are losing a arguement and cant handle it.
in short, many reasons.   just because someone requests it doesnt mean it is going to happen.

why do people ask for topics to be locked?

Usually because their side is losing the discussion and can't offer any facts to back them up. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

There are topics and people here that repeat with clock-like precision.  It becomes this childish baiting match where one person attempts to engage another in the same debate they've had 7000 times.  Neither with change their opinion (I suspect they are incapable of such self analysis) so the only option left is to refight old threads.  It has nothing to do with who is winning, generally both sides feel like they are winning.  It isn't respectful, it isn't a good image to project, and it detracts from GBO and it's family atmosphere.  As such, it may be locked.

Now threads can also be locked for a pile of other reasons including safety, legal exposure, spam, porn, language, unsponsored advertisements, etc... but those are usually not the lockings that people complain about.

Is it time to lock this one?

Actually that was a joke, but is there a way to un-highlight a topic after you have visited it?

It seems like we have one moderator here who locks the threads he does not agree with. Now he would never admit that, but common sense lets us know its true.

I don't think that's the case. I believe he is trying to be fair and impartial in the decisions he makes. I'm sure that had he not locked the recent threads he did they would have continued the same pissing contest that was going on with neither side agreeing with the other or anyone changing anyone's view point. I'm equally sure that within a week the same folks will manage to get yet another thread going in which the same argument will continue.

It is why I dumped the religion discussion forums. I hate discussion on religion or politics when it isn't face to face. I mostly tend to stay out of them online. In this case both are involved in these threads. I suspect most of them will find the same end after a half dozen or so pages of the same comments over and over.

Like the one on "Israels right to exist"!...........It has become a P-----g contest between believers and non-believers.

My faith is a private part of me, and is not up for debate.
There never has been a winner in discussing Religion, and never will be.
Even among self proclaimed Christians, they argue over the interpretation of the Bible. (The reason for so many denominations).

Politics is almost as bad, but I got to say................ I love debating it ::)

Freedom Of Speech.....Once we lose it, every other freedom will follow.

Can't really agree with that. There may be a fence sitter out there who just needs the right words to accept the fact that God is real. Just because they don't post and say it doesn't mean that minds have not been influenced. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

What one speculates as not worthwhile/don't like/unimportant are anothers meat and potatoes.
The real problem is Control.
If you don't like it, don't get involved in it. If you get involved--take your feelings off your shirtsleeve.
With religion, generally, most folks don't know what or why they believe except that was what they were told.
I disagree that forum are not face to face.
Blessings

Same for me myronman. There are a few here who I go round and round with over the same things, but if they keep repeating the lies they are telling I am going to correct them time and again.
