357 Max - SB1 or SB2?
« on: June 17, 2010, 03:44:00 PM »
SAAMI Pressures

357 Mag - 35K
44  Mag - 36K
357 MAX - 40K

This is a reference in the FAQs to shooting the 357 MAX @ 48K.

H&R says 357 Mag & 44 Mag okay for the SB1 frame.  For the 357 MAX, do you need an SB2 frame to be on the safe side if you want to go to SAAMI Max or above?

I assume this has been discussed previously but didn't see it in the FAQs, and with Adult ADD it easier to post than search. ;D

10-4 on the units.  So SB-1 should be good to go on a Maxi.

Tom, this is simply what I do, not necessarily a recommendation.  I put all my rifles on SB2 frames; to avoid a possible catastrophic mixup by my grandkids or someone else later.  For the life of me, I don't understand why they even make SB1 frames because of the liability.

My Maxis and ALL my centerfire rifles are on SB2s.

Another thought just occured to me.  What would happen if someone rechambered a .357 mag. or Maxi to .35 Rem. and put it back on the same frame?

No catastrophe there Pete, the 35 Rem has a lower SAAMI MAP than the 44 mag and almost identical case head diameter.

I  wasn't aware of that fact, thanks Tim.  It's a  shame they don't offer the .35 or the Maxi.  I think they'd both sell.  It'd be easy and cheap for them since it's the same barrel. JMO

Being a bottlenecked round, it may never be available on an SB1 frame, but we can always hope it and the 30-30 will some day, perhaps in the interest of keeping costs down, they may even offer them on SB1s.....if they'll spend the R&D costs on them.

Peter & Tim,

Figures, I just sold my extra SB2 the day before I bought the 357 Trapper.  I will keep the SB1 frame for now, most the rounds are going to be 38 plinkers for my wife & daughter.  Making another run at getting my kid to shoot the 357 Handi, struck out last year with the free one my buddy let me have.  Kid is a bit bigger, maybe it will work this time.  If not I guess I'll have to shoot the Talo. ;D

When I reamed my sb1 to max, Tim helped me with some data.  The conclusion was that the 30/30 was offered at one time on the topper frame.  The maxi and 30/30 run at about the same pressures (I think, memory problem here).  (The maximum load on the maxi could be a little higher) The case head diameter on the 30/30 is larger than the maxi, therefore generating more case head thrust.  So.....if the topper held the 30/30, the sb1 receiver is stronger than the topper, it's good to go on the maxi, with some margin of safety.

I have never had a problem loading up to the max on the maxi ;)

Aside from the fact that you can ream to .460 S&W the .45 Colt Carbine barrel would also be a nice offering for the SB1 frame.

So, it is safe to put a Hornet barrel on an SB1 then?

Several members have including myself with no serious problems, some have had primer issues tho with the big firing pin, the rifle SB1 frames have a smaller rifle size firing pin which eliminates the issue. I got cratered small pistol primers using Larry's Hornet adapter in a 12ga USH, but it shot great and ejected just fine.

Definitely, even +P Colt loads are lower pressure than 44mag with a negligible case head size difference, but I think the ease of a Casull/460 rechamber may keep them from doing so.
