The 40cal barrel would be a nice thing to have for all of the reasons that you outlined; ...
... if you have access some shooter friendly ranges.

IMHO, most aftermarket "drop in" barrels end up requiring some fitting / smithing.

Most of the ranges around here will not allow lead bullets: "Leadphobia".
In fairness, one of my young competition shooter friends has to do annual blood testing for lead contamination.
He has been shooting [a lot] all of his life and has borderline lead poisoning.

One of the big reasons why I would just reload for the 10mm is because you could easily collect and maintain enough of YOUR easily identifiable once fired brass to last a lifetime.

I won't even bother to pick up 40cal "range brass", even where they allow you to.
Much of it just isn't worth trying to salvage.
Glocks, especially the older ones destroy 40cal brass.
I sold off my 40cal Glocks years ago.
I have, and really like my G26, G19, G32; and may get a G34, maybe even a G31.

For the price of a few thousand factory 40cal, you could buy a Dillon progressive and shoot 10mm for peanuts.
Heck, buy two:
for the price of a few thousand factory 45 acp, you could buy a Dillon progressive and shoot 45 acp for peanuts.

I'm fresh out of smileys, so I will just wish you lots of fun ... safely.

I guess I'm lucky, I have access to three local outdoor ranges with no restrictions on bullets.
Also on my last G-20, the KKM .40 conversion was a nice drop in fit, the only issue was it hit about 2" to the right of the 10mm barrel at 25 yards, I'm putting adjustable sights on the 20 just for that possibility.
Now stop trying to rain on my parade! :)

Sorry guy's it going to be a Ruger 22 in any of several flavors, then comes the Browning Buckmark.

The other combat guns are good for specific purposes but the 22 is going to be the best all around for long term use.

Environmentalists Seek National Ban on Lead Ammo

"Lead, for centuries the core ingredient of ammunition, is now coming under attack itself. As the American military begins to embrace “green bullets,” environmental groups are pushing state and federal officials to ban the use of lead in hunters’ guns and fishermen’s tackle. Their goal is to protect both the animals that scavenge the carcasses of hunted prey and the people who consume meat from hunting expeditions. On Tuesday, the Center for Biological Diversity and the American Bird Conservancy plan to file a petition with the Environmental Protection Agency seeking a comprehensive nationwide ban on lead-based sporting ammunition and fishing tackle… (The military may find itself on the wrong end of unintended consequences with its shift to tungsten-core bullets – tungsten is suspected, in some quarters, of being a carcinogen.)"

Yup, lead in hunting bullets is already banned in Kaliforni, but even they still allow lead for practice.
If they can't ban our guns, they'll try to ban our ammo.
I've loaded quite a few 9mm and .45 auto lead free frangibles from Sinterfire. Not as cheap as FMJ/plated, but less than match or JHP. Quite accurate too.

What really frosts me about this lead free mania, is that at least half of the homes in this country ...
even in in Kalipornia ... have lead flashings and roof jacks.

Somehow, squirrels and other critters like to nibble on them [tasty ? ]; and of course, ...
hawks, coyotes, dogs and other carnivores eat those.

Any quality 1911 or CZ-75 variant or Browning Hi-Power.
All three are trustworthy and elegant looking pistols.

I am essentially ignorant of the pros and cons of the current crop of pistols. The last big caliber semiauto I carried was a series 70 Colt .45 auto. Now there is a bewildering array to choose from. My next purchase would have to be a do all sort of handgun. It would have to be accurate enough to be pressed into service as a hunting gun, have enough stopping power for up close and personal, shoot flat enough to use at extended ranges, and carry enough rounds for a serious rate of fire. I need some feedback to help me decide what to buy. I am an experienced handgunner. I own/ shoot a .44 mag Redhawk, a S&W 617, and a Ruger 22/45. All opinions welcome. Personal experience preferred.

Well you have a rather mixed array of qualifiers, and although I have built a many 1911 over the years, and won a fight with one in 1978, I will say they can be finicky at times when mixing some ammo, and they certainly are not a flat shooter for extended ranges. With that one aspect of the caliber, I think you could eliminate the 1911, so that leaves us with a little hotter round such as the 40 S&W. More velocity, and in a configuration such as the Glock 23 with night sights, it would fit most all of you qualifiers. I have carried the Model 23 extensively and trained heavily with it in a SWAT environment, and it is not only a fight stopper, it is ultra reliable, easy to maintain, and accurate enough to more than meet your qualifiers. I, being a Glock armorer can also say that the pistol-caliber combination is not sensitive to loose grip stoppages, and it's pointing characteristics are excellent.

Wanted a custom 40 s&w glock but bought a new model 22 Gen 4 instead. It came with 3 magazines and I used the money I saved for reloading components.

Solid choice. I was very impressed with the recoil reduction in the gen 4 G-17 I fired. I would imagine it will be of greater benefit in the 22.
I think .40s&w is popular enough that it is as available as 9mm or .45acp, with better ballistics than either.

I finally got my 2nd gen G-20 from Gunbroker and it's great shape, looks like it's barely been used, the copper anti-seize is still in the slide.
Got 1,000 .400"/165 plated bullets from Midway, and as soon as the bank account recovers, I'll get that .40 conversion.

Yeah Hammerhead I gave some thought about doing the same thing but went with the 40 S&W instead. My second glock will probably be a 10mm. I am thinking about a .22 LR conversion unit to practice with.

Well .40 is far and away more popular and available than 10mm, so the Glock 22 is clearly the more practical choice.
Good power, rustproof, reliable, kind of the modern day magnum revolver.

10mm has always been one of my pet calibers, and I like the large frame Glocks, so when I saw a nice 2nd gen model for $440, I grabbed it.
Just bought 10mm/.40 reloading dies today, but there was no 10mm ammo at any of the three gun shops I went to. I shot up 20 rounds of CCI Blazer I had from years back, whetted my appetite for more, time to crank up the press.

Have you got that turned around? I have always been told that the 10mm if classified as a magnum round would be close to the same recoil and ballistics as a 41 magnum. The FBI first started out wanting to use it as a duty handgun, but the smaller stature agents (females) wasn't able to handle the recoil of the 10mm, so the 40S&W was then the chosen duty sidearm to meet that requirement because of it's lesser recoil.

I think the word "best"  needs to be qualified.  Best for what?  A gun fight,  big game hunting, real life survival?   Lots of good picks out there if you know what the objective is.  I guess that why I have several handguns......

Same with me and I agree completely! What's best for me, might not be best for someone else. What caliber is best for me might not be best for someone else either. This topic has too many bests that wants to make them best for all people, which is a physical improbability. People are different, have different size hands and bodies, so therefore, there's not a best all around semiauto that will fill the needs of everyone. What I carry for my personal defense handgun works great for me, but it won't work great for everyone. And I don't use mine to hunt with, I use an even bigger and heavier recoil revolver for that. And another equation comes into play when people live in different parts of the country, what's best to carry concealed when you only wear a thin Tee shirt about half the year? There's not a best all around semiauto that fills the needs of everyone all the time everywhere.

What's really best for you as an individual is what you can shoot and hit a target with accurately, conceal the best if wearing thinner clothes or has a track record of dependability, not what you want everyone else to think is best.

I'm not saying the .40 is the equal of any of the magnum revolver calibers, or even the 10mm, just a very general statement about the how the .40 has become the staple of law enforcement and many civilians shooters as well. It's as common to see .40 caliber guns these days as it was to see .357 magnum revolvers in decades past.
Sure, a magnum or .45 Colt revolver may be the best choice as a survival sidearm, but if one wants an auto, .40 is a good choice, as long as you can hit with it.
I went with the 10mm Glock because I know I can shoot it well outdoors, it's rugged, lightweight, rust proof and has good capacity.

The .40 is a good choice for some, but not for everyone. There's a lot of good choices in calibers out there and everyone has their favorite. Mine happens to be a 45acp, why, because I have used that caliber for over 50 years now and know exactly how it performs. I have seen firsthand in Korea what a 45acp will do. I have also seen firsthand at many murder scenes what a 45acp will do. That's not to say that other calibers are not as good as I have also see what a few other calibers will do at murder scenes and shooting scenes. I know of one particular shooting where a guy shot three perps trying to rob a barber shop with a small 25 caliber semiauto taking all three out. Me, I wouldn't want to trust myself with that caliber, but it was the best for that individual at the time and it worked for him. If a person is a competent shooter, other calibers are just as good, but one must choose what is best for them, not what someone says, that I have a certain caliber or certain semiauto and say that everyone should get the exact same. My choice is the caliber that I know and trust and will lay my life on the line in knowing that it will work when I need it the most.

Well I wasn't trying to start an arguement. I just wanted opinions from other shooters who had experience with the newer semiautos. I too at one time carried a .45 Colt acp as my primary pistol. I also carried a 4 inch 629 Smith 44 mag. I was looking for a high capacity, reliable, semiauto with some punch for defensive purposes and that could be a hunting gun in a pinch. One gun to grab for many different applications. Of course the caliber also plays into the equation. For my needs/wants the Glock in 40 S&W seemed appropriate. It has the reputation of being reliable. I was told "the AK-47 of semiauto pistols" I was told, "It is accurate enough to make head shots on a 100 yard target." I was told that," The factory has one with over 300,000 rounds though it and still going." I was told,"Comparable in power to the .357 mag."Some guys hated Glocks, Some guys enthusiatically recommended them. The same with caliber/cartridge. The Glock in 10mm and or 40 S&W seemed to have a good following. I choose the 40 S&W over 10 mm because of ammo availability and it is a common caliber between me and two of my sons. Other calibers and pistols were used and championed by knowledgeable shooters on this board and through all the feedback I was able to make an informed decision for my purchase. The discussion has been enlightening and appreciated.

If its best over all for any job then I will stick to a 10mm Glock or Colt . hunt, target shoot or defend ones self it will do all.

The best is the one I have in a holster on my belt. Why, because it's right there ready to be used when I need it. All those other bests that everyone talks about won't do me a bit of good, so they are not the best for me. ;)

Any discussion of "best" pistol must start with the first priority of winning a firefight.
Hunting, plinking, "survival", fun, etc., are all valid needs / wants ...
after you satisfy priority #1.

What is best for hunting, or plinking, or "survival", or fun, etc., are all going to be different.
No one pistol is best for all of those.
Accordingly, I will address the topic of "best" pistol with the first priority of winning a firefight.

I have owned just about every toy out there, including a G20 and a Delta Elite.
I liked the G20 and I loved the Delta Elite.

With the increased violence, lethality, and intensity of the current typical threat;
and the great modern pistols available today;
the higher capacity, lighter weight, smaller size, and state of the art [engineering, technology, and design] make the 357SIG pistols my first choice.

Frankly, there are a lot of really great pistols available today, and the modern ammo is light years ahead of what we had when I was a young pistolero.
I would not dismiss good modern pistols in 9mm, 40cal, or even 45acp.

The most important thing is to thoroughly understand the design pros and cons of the SAOs, DA assisted SAOs [strikers],  DA/SAs, and DAOs.

Settle on the platform you have the most faith in and then practice and train constantly and continuously.

I had both a Glock and Sig in 357 sig . Both were loud 9mm's nothing more really . I shot a possum with one and the bullet failed to go thru it from side to side . And it was a small one . I would hate to see what it would do on a 250 lb thug with a leather coat on if ever the need arose.

CZ 75.  This is a fabulous pistol, in its many variants.  It is accurate, beautiful, ergonomically well designed, and in the SP 01, truly state of the art.
The Sig is nice also.

I have to agree.  I would add a Gen 4 Glock to the list as well.

I have an SP01 and I have to say it is an amazing pistol, and 'beautiful' is a very apt term for it.
