Mnt. Cur running deer off

I bought a mountain cur recently. He is about 8 mo. old and he is driving me crazy. He won't stop running my deer off around the house. I have tried to shoot a squirrel out on him but he can't stay still long enough. He like to eat them after I shoot one and give to him. I have tried to stop him from the deer running but it is no use. The guy I got him from has a shock collar I guess I will have to borrow. Any suggestions on how to stop him from deer hunting and to start squirrel hunting? Do yu think he is still too young to teach? I am a man of little patience when it comes to things like this.

Alright, you definetly need the shock collar.....When he runs deer, give him a nice, hard blast of the thing....He should get the message then, if he does it again then give him a harder blast of it...Make him learn what he's doing wrong the hard way....If it doesn't work he's hopeless....

As for the squirrel, he might not like it....Different hunting dogs hunt different things...I've had some that I tried on bear but wouldn't run but now they love to run coyotes...

Try and have a little patience with him, but don;t give him much. If you only want a squirrel dog, get rid of him if he won't hunt them...

But, some young dogs do need patience, like some of my 1 year old bear hounds need to be broke from whining to be let out when I have my dogs getting a bear going....

Dogs act differently, just find out what's best foir your dog.

Thanks for the info. I've got him tied to the front porch now. He barked and ran something from about 1 am to daylight until I got tired of it and tied him.

I had to tie him this morning. My other dog was barking at the deer afterwards. I can call him back and make him mind. The mountain cur has one thing on his brain, running game. Here is his mug shot.

Looks are definetly deceiving.....lol.....Good looking dog anyways

Anyways, I recommend tieing a "bad" dog that doesn't listen to you as he should anyways.....even my "good" dogs(the obedient ones) stay tied up. Then again, I have a candybox set up to run bears from anyways....So I'd hate to have to go catch the dogs in the dead of night because they ran off to the candybox and started on a bear. Especially since a bear hits it just about every night or early morning

Yeah. I don't think I'd like to be out there at night with a black bear. One of my friends saw a mom and two cubs about 10 mi. from my house. I live out in the sticks, so there are probably some around here from time to time. Very uncommon though. My neighbors told me they had watched a black panther coming out of our driveway a few times a couple of years ago. We just moved here last year so I haven't seen one yet.

Well, how's he doing anyways?

Is he doing better squirrel hunting wise or is he still chewing them up?

I figure he still must be chasing animals when he get's loose......

He'll eat one in 8 sec. flat. Just kidding. He still eats them and anything else he can get his paws on (shoes, clothes, mice, chipmunks, rabbits, ect...). It is going to take some work but I think I can break him. My friend is going to let me borrow his shock collar. I GUARANTEE that will get his attention. I've seen my friend use it on his coon dog when he would run by him at night and not come back when he called him. He would let out a yelp and come running and sit down at his feet. Now that's obedience. Mine is tied as we speak. I let him loose last night when I fed him and he ate and ran. I heard him way up on a hill beside our house barking from inside with the T.V. on. I successfully called him back and told him to stay. One minute later he was at it again. I had a harder time getting him in, but when I did I tied him and let him know I didn't like what he did. Mountain curs are real sensitive. If you get on to them, they remember it for days.

Lol, we do that when we run off the candybox out yonder by my place, we have to zap the coon dogs and tell them to get into their barrels so tehy'll shut up or they'll bark and turn they bear away from where we want him to go...
