If you think he's wacky now, read his bio. He is a strange but, knowledgeable fellow.

Problem with these shows is you don't really know how knowledgable they are. They get plenty of advanced warning about where they're going to survive so they can study up on local survival tactics. It's a little suspicious that somehow they know all the edible plants in Laos! Also it's difficult to watch when the items they find in the "stuff they happen to have" seems a little too convenient. For instance, they had some scuba gear, and they were able to get magnets out of the scuba mask they said were there for "defogging" the mask. I'm sorry, but I dive and I've never seen magnets in a mask before. And when they used the magnets for finding north, their explanation of where the magnets were pointing was wrong! I'ld have to say they knew where north was because their crew pointed the way.

I watched the show you're talking about and found it to be fine and believeable.  These guys have been at this for many many years and are quite well known and respected.  Is it perfect...?....no it isn't.

I do not find it odd that they would know the local edible plants.
In boy scouts our troop master made us pass a plant test before we could go on different camping trips.
we had to know what was poisonous in the area before we could go.  So we did not eat the wrong blue berries and did not burn the wrong wood.
It may make sense to know them and be able to identify the three or four most common edible plants in the area you are headed.  So that one does not seem far fetched.
As for finding magnets and why if you are going hiking would you have scuba gear.  I did not see the episode but saw the trailer on how they said you could get lost easily not far from the hotel in the jungle.
Why not simply tell people if you are going out side in the woods in a unfamiliar place carry a compass.  They sell them in every outdoor shop and they are from $10 to 100, slip easily in a pocket and do not weigh much for travel.  i keep a Compass, signal mirror, swiss army knife, and wooden matches in a small personal first aid kit

I have a tiny magnet stuck inside my P38 can openor that is attached to my keyring.  When wedged in a small piece of wood and floated it works fine.

I remember making a compass with a steel sail needle and we had to have one with us for boy scouts.
I just found it easier to have a real compass with me than have to guess what side is north.
Also hunting in the desert makes it difficult to find a hunk of wood, let alone enough water to float the wood in.

I like the show so far. I have read Codys books and enjoyed them. Never heard of the other guy but he seems to have quite a bit of knowledge and skill. He has a little too much ego IMO, but I guess the personality clash is supposed to be part of the show.

I watched a couple of episodes and keep missing the others but, of the two I think Cody would survive longer if separated as long as no humans were after them. The other guy in my opinion sometimes takes unnecessary chances to HURRIDLY get from point A to point B. Cody on the other hand though WEIRD, is a COYOTE. He takes his time, goes around trouble, and will eat anything.

Whatever works is more important than being one with nature.  I think Dave is much more creative.

It's a cool show.  Cody is part of the "become one with nature to survive" group.  Dave on the other hand, is ARMY all the way.  Kick ass and move on.  Obviously both schools will get it done.

I like Cody because he can survive with the absolute bare minimums...  Heck, he doesn't wear shoes.  EVER.  Even in the Artic episode he didn't wear shoes, just socks.  No fancy gear at all.  He reminds me of an Apache, able to live off the country with just his mind, hands, and knife.  Old school survival.

Dave is able to survive as well, but he needs modern equipment to be more proficient in doing it.  Boots, backpack, etc.  I've not been in the military, but I have several friends who have.  I think the biggest mistake the military makes in survival training is stressing the need to be properly "prepared".  You have to have the full compliment of survival gear to make it.  A 40lb ALICE pack of gear is "needed" to survive.  That kind of defeats the mental part of survival from the beginning, IMO.

As with any reality show, it’s purely entertainment and they get paid to keep the audience glued pure and simple.

In true survival situations, people act differently as expected.  It’s nice to be lost and have a crew of people know exactly where you are at all times.

they both bring different styles to the table and i would say from what little i have seen of the show, cody would fair better (i believe) than the other guy.  cody is smart, dont let the hippy front fool ya.  i have seen some of his interviews and he is a sharp cookie.

Cody makes some brilliant observations on page 209 of his book- when all hell breaks loose- " thanks to clueless TV producers (&co), testosterone and lots of ego there is great pressumre for the survival instructor to make magic and prove themselves at all costs, including honesty, to be able to pull the rabbit out of the hat regardless of circumstances. History has proved this to be a lie...."

I like Cody's writing, and living on the edge of the kalahari desert I can relate to many of his concerns and ideas (he lives in the US Semi Desert of Arizona),  almost daily I interact with the san (Bushmen) who are still stone age hunter/gatherers and over 30 years of hunting with them and using them as trackers I have a fair insight into "living free" and way off the grid. - Heck I live off the grid- the nearest electricity connection is now 40 miles away (since the malitia destroyed the transformers)...but I have a rifle, a generator and enough money to buy solar electricity units etc.

Don't know about the rest of ya'll but i tend to try and learn what i would need for survival when i go to different places . What i carry in the moutians is different than at the beach. Same is true when going to Texas vs Canada . There are many items that are the same but some are different . Clothes being one that can be very different depending on season . Tires on the vehicle another.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

If you don't take the time to learn something about the area you're going to be in, not much point in worrying about preparing for survival, IMO.  Knowledge is the first tool you need to have.

It's on Fridays at 10PM E/P, they have past episodes available online, repeats on Sunday morning, on Dish anyway.

Thanks, we usually watch a movie on Friday nights.  We like old sci-fi and cowboy movies, some others that were classics.  Only about one new movie comes out that is worth watching about every two years.  Wife gets tired of cowboy movies.  We both like classic sci-fi like Forbidden Planet (where Star Trek got its ideas from), the old version of "The Day The Earth Stood Still", and "War of the Worlds".  Newer stuff like "Back to the Future".  I like all of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood cowboy movies.  Also Jimmy Stewart, Tom Selleck movies also.  We also like some old Clark Gable movies, African Queen, and stuff like that.

+1, I can't remember the last time I watched live TV, I just skip thru any commercials, an hour program takes about 40 minutes to watch.  ;)

I think that the contrasting styles between Cody & Dave prove the old saying that there is more than one way to skin a cat. BTW, I've skinned many a squirrel or deer but only one cat.

Dave always gets the fire going and gets the meat.

Did you see the Arizona episode?  Cody ruled in that one.  Of course, it's his home turf.  He's the one that got a fire going first this time.  Dave tried the bow drill with little success.  Cody made a hand drill set with a knife he chipped out of stone.  Dave wore HUGE blisters on his hands trying to get the fire going with it.  Eventually, he did get one started though.

Best quote yet:

Cody Lundin:  "If he bitches much more, I'll filter the water through the crotch of my shorts and flavor it desert style"
