My personal choice for the "best" deer rifle I currently own is probably
my Winchester model 94, 30-30, 1955 vintage in excellent to near
near mint shape. It is balanced, turns on a dime, low recoil, has more
than enough power, and is very accurate.

My BAR in300 Win Mag was my best, it was too loud so I traded it, kinda regret that.

You could be right DM, although I dearly love the roberts. Wish I could find a drilling in roberts. You know, of course they share the same parent case.  ;D

pastorp, do you reload for your 257 roberts?????? I had one in a Rem. classic...shot it for one fall and was more than happy to see it go down the road...the loads I tried, never gave me the shock and traj. that I had come to expect from that class of rifle...I had used 243's, 6mm's, and 25-06's up to that point and felt the .257 would be a winner...it shot ok, but just didn't seem to shoot flat enough or have good killing power...I only shot handloads, and I am not sure I saved the date or gave it to the guy I sold the rifle too...never put a factory round through it...it was a pretty rifle and handled well.....

Yes I Load for the Roberts, coyote hunter. I've used 25-06 & even the 257 weatherby as well as the 250 savage & the roberts. They all worked fine for me.  ;D The BLR of course is only available in the roberts & I don't care for bolt action rifles..

I pulled out my dad's BAR 243 to sight it in for my son to hunt with this season. I forgot how accurate this gun was, back in 82 I made a couple 300+ yard shots with this gun and Saturday once it was dialed in with a new scope, it was shooting groups you could cover with a quarter at a 100 yards. When my Grandfather had it he kept it zeroed at 200 yards, I think that made it 1.5 inches high at 100 and 3.5 or 4 inches low at 300. Some people consider the 243 a varmint gun, but I know a lot of folks hunt mule deer and elk with them so I think it's a perfect whitetail caliber.
Just trying not to do anything stupid. (And failing miserably.)

My .243 Win. Featherweight XTR is all I care to hunt Mule Deer and Antelope with. It's never let me down out to a little over 300yds. It makes the prairie dogs explode with 70gr Noslers. My best shot so far was pushing 225yds. Good field shooting practice.

For me the best deer rifle is often the one I just tagged a deer with.  I had a Remington 742 in .243 for about 20 years that remains the most accurate rifle I have owned.  There are two other reasons it was my favorite for a long time (until I sold it).  It had iron sights to back up the scope (I don't use see-thru scope mounts) if there was any failure.  Two, it had a detachable magazine.  My current favorite is my Browning BLR in .270.  It is very accurate and meets my other two standards.   ;D

the amish machine gun(rem 760-7600 carbine or rifle) is the best for me out to 300yds. fast, dependable, accurett and comes in meny calibures. i tried the bpr,but it just was to big and bulky for me. eastbank.

I'll always have a soft spot for my Weatherby Mark V but an old Browning in 7MM Rem has probably taken more of my deer (whitetail) than all the others combined.

That photo sure makes a good argument for it.  Nice deer and nice rifle!!

Right now I don't have a favorite; the last deer I killed was with a Rem 700 classic in .243W, but someone took it and didn't bring it back.  I don't know who took it or I'd certainly get it back.  I've got a new one now, but it's got a ways to go to become my "favorite".

I just thought I'd add that my son took a deer Thanksgiving with my M700 in .257 Roberts (Classic). The load was IMR 4350 under a Berger 115gr hunting VLD in the woods at a range of about 40 yards.  Sure didn't have to have that low drag bullet at that range, but it went down like a sack of potatoes.  Maybe this one is my favorite right now. :D - EJ

Browning once made a good shotgun.  Now they don't really make anything good.

Man ,I'm sure glad I got my brownings before they started making them bad. Jonathan M. would roll over in his grave. It would be hard for him though,as they buried him with his patents ,so theres not much room to move.

If you bought good Brownings, they must be very old.  The jap made guns are the pits.

The best deer rifle is a good bolt action .30-06 that will shoot 1/2" groups.  A 3-9X40 tops it off to perfection.

A 30-06 with a 3-9x40 for all circumstances/applications sounds like a bad plan to me. Thinking of deer in the heavy cover/short shot scenario, there are much better choices.

Perhaps but they aren't good choices for the 500 yard and/or 400lb deer.

You have 400lb Deer ? ;)

Also where you hunt , swamps and such , I'm with Cabin  heavy cover/short shot scenario, there are much better choices - JMHO.

A 500 yard shot would not be a short shot in heavy cover scenario. Also, I'm unaware of the 400lb deer scenario in the north FL swamps, any swamp or heavy cover. In fact, I'm struggling to find the likely hood of a 400lb deer, period, with rare exception worth planning for to this degree.

I think it’s fair to say the 30-06 topped with a 3-9 is not the best choice for close in heavy cover deer work. My choice would be the 30-30 or 44mag lever gun with a 16 inch barrel topped with a high quality red dot or a low power like a 1-4. A wide FOV and excellent light transmission for easy target acquisition and short barrel are what these products are designed for. 30-06 with a 3-9 is a long range set up in the mid power rifle cartridge line up.

A 30-06 pump or semi with open sights would make a good heavy cover gun.
