Another Stevens 200

I picked up my second Steven 200 Friday, The first was 308, this one I ordered 22-250, I have two other Savages the 110 and 111, the 111 is 223, I ordered the Dies for the new 200 about the same time, I thought I would try the Hornady 55 Grain SP I use in the 111, before I started ordering Bullets, Got a very pleasant surprise, with a mid Range Hornady load and Varget powder, its grouping great, At 150 yards with a Nikon 3 X 9 X 40  I am very happy with the results, and I may not get the trigger job done on this one like the 308, the triggers not that bad for a Stevens.

I thought that the 111 is a long action?

I guess I don’t know what guns I have, that should have been a model 11 not 111, its 223, that’s one of the reasons I settled on the 22-250, and not the 25-06, I went threw that whole Savage long action deal with the 270. I needed step back mounts on the 270, even with the short action Savage don’t give you a lot of room to mount a scope .

Trying to get a hold on Savage serial #'s can be interesting.  I recently picked up a used Mod 110 in .223.

With Savage guns, two numbers such as 11 or 12 indicate short action and three numbers 110 or 114 for example indicate long action. You could still have a 223 on a long action if the barrel and bolt head were swapped but the magazine would not work, unless it was swapped out too. I have a Stevens 200 that was a 30-06 (long action) that I put a 7mm-08 (short action round) barrel on. They share the same bolt head size so the original bolt works and since the case is the same diameter, the magazine works OK too.

As far as mounts are concerned you can put one piece mounts on the rifle and then mount the front ring over the ejection port or you can get off set rings and mount a scope. My long action Stevens 200 came with a scope and rings. the front ring was off set.

I seem to remember that at one time Savage only offered the 110 model and it could be had in short and long calibers.  A magazine block was used for the shorter calibers.  Mine has the mag block.

Am I mistaken?

Evidently there are some long actions that were/are chambered in 223.

Savage just recently seperated the coding for long action and short action. I know it has been less than 10 years since they did it.

i did buy a .223 new 20 yrs ago that was a long action. long or short they are great rifles
