Rumor has it....(scuttlebutt)
« on: June 22, 2010, 07:15:25 AM »
A major cannon maker is planting a forest to supply wood for the company.

Pure scuttlebutt, may have no basis in fact...

Any body else heard such rumors....

Well the type wood rumored is Maple, but that kind of indicates a Canadian connection.  Maybe nostalgia, remembering trips north of the line. The Canadians did have a lower drinking age...although alder would be usefull for making there own charcoal.

Yes truly farsighted!!

Ummm...... Far sighted indeed..... how long till this forest is considered
old growth enough to be able to use?  Or is this manufacturer building
smaller scale?

we had a very similar project here in sweden a few years ago , it was the swedish government who planted over 300 000 oak trees . starting in 1832 .
the only reason was to secure the access of high quality oak timber for the swedish navy .
so in mid 1970 the government administrator called the navy and told them that they was ready to cut down, but by some reason the navy wasnt interested any more   ;D

this may sound like a funny story , but every word of it is true

as you dont got å , ä and ö  letters you can copy this and google it and you can see that its true

visingsö is an island in one of swedens largest lakes , the lake is vättern .

By the time these trees are ready to harvest the Eco's will have them staked out and will be camping amongst them. Can't cut them and use them in cannon builds. Only be good to look at.

A major cannon maker with magnificent trees that Rocklock has seen.  The cannon maker seems obvious enough, but the trees are another thing.  Maples are plentiful in Maine. As a matter of fact, Maine was third in the nation in maple syrup production this year with 310,000 gallons of the wonderful sweetness produced.

Yeah but how long does it take for an oak tree to mature in Colorado?

Even 1:6 scale oak trees.....

an oak tree in colo. ! what is the sound of hand clapping ? ...in the woods tree falling and .....you know !

no these are true shade trees s the kind that will stagger (ryhmes with dagger) your mind when you see the beauty and grace of these wonderfull trees .

I forgot to take my nitro pills with me , but tomorrow I'm gonna give them a few for sure . TO keep ! not to eat right off unless my timming is impecable ....and it usually is  ;D

No I'm not going to help them finish digging the holes ....they were mere divits this afternoon .

My wife and I were enjoying an outting ....you know killing time when I found myself at Mikes door step . Of course "someone" made a pizzerininse (ryhmes with bysintine) , poor error in time estimation (ryhmes with hacy......) and we were early ....way . we ate lunch , walked the lovley sidewalks of Broomfield ....YES all of them !  ;D

and finaly the truck that could , bleated , chugged , stumbbled and did land "Tranquitity Base here ....."

they had about the same chance these trees had and journey to make it home .

BUT THEY DID !

two are reportedly "gone to ground" , survivors will be burried on the morrow . there are no appeals '

"hangman ,hangman save me from the gallows pole ...? (LZ)

"we gotta plant the darn tree first fool ! dont worry buddy you got years to go !!!!" (GL)

That second line was omitted becase welllll ..... I was a threat to them  ;D :D ::) ::)

Julu,

All I can say is the clues are there for the clueless,  though some might bark up the wrong tree,

all you need do is prune away this thread until you can see the forest through the trees.......

While others will hedge their bets........and some will be left pine-ing for the truth.......

If you guessed Colorado, I guess you know the name of the company, and it ain't Backyard Bronze, Inc. either.  I'm surprised Gary had room for a furnace in that forest!  I have not planted trees in years and I don't believe Mike ever has, so with a lot of help from my son, the two old farts got two monster holes dug and two trees planted.  These two are designed to give the overseers of the willow and alder forest along the creek adjacent to Mike's property some shade as they watch over the planting of new ranks and files of willows and alders and also regular harvesting of 3/4" diameter limbs and the "special processing" of those slender limbs.

An Autumn Blaze Maple and an American Linden will provide plenty of quality shade by the time the creekside forest is mature, about two years.  The Linden may provide a few immature 3/4" branches for "special processing" too.  Two photos of the inspiration for all this effort is shown below.

However, the current political climate is actually driving it.  If you don't think things are seriously askew now, take a look around two years from now.  That should open your eyes!!!

You guys are pretty sharp, most of you had all this figured out when Ex 49'er said 'alder' and Double D. said charcoal, didn't you??

After you look at the photos below, you will know for sure.  Spuddy,   Is it New York, Vermont, then Maine for volume of Maple Syrup production?

KABAR2,   You are really something else, I think you are going to be placed on my wordsmithing help list, right at the top.  Today from Allen:

Diagrams of huge retorts in this very well-designed powder mill.  Gasses from these large retorts were used to provide chemical energy for other heating operations. Does anyone know where these gasses came from?

Does anyone know where these gasses came from?

Presumably from the destructive distillation of willow and alder branches (or something similar.)

 A - From "large retorts."
