Dutch Oven coming today!
« on: June 22, 2010, 07:38:14 AM »
I just checked the tracking number and it went out for delivery to my house today!   ;D

After looking around a bit I couldn't find the style Dutch Oven I wanted locally, so I ordered one online from Target.  The price wasn't out of line for a new Lodge brand, and they had free shipping!   :o  So I bought a 6 qt.  It should have a diameter around 12 inches or so like the 8 qt. does, but it isn't as deep.  Naturally it has the lip on the lid and 3 legs.

A Club brother's wife also ordered me a "cast iron cookbook" from her book club, but first, after I re-season this bad boy, Ima gonna try Dee's bisquet recipe!   :D

Whoda ever thunk that I would reach a stage in my life where happiness could come in the form of a dutch oven...  :-\

You'll get spoiled real quick and if you got a cast fry pan to go with it. You'll pitch all that teflon stuff!
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

Cast is about all we use around here.  I've got skillets from 4" to 24".  I can fry 2 dozen eggs at once!  The only problem is me and sweet thang can't eat that many at once.

Oh I been cookin with cast iron since I was a kid.  Just never owned a dutch oven myself.   :-\   I was in the military in the early 60's when my folks sold the "home place" and moved to Florida.  They left all the "old junk," iron ware and other stuff that would be worth a fortune now, in the house and barn and sold it all in one package.

I love my DO!  ;D  Saturday morning is bisquet time!  :D

I've been cooking on and off with CI since i was a small kid, in fact i'm STILL cooking on much of the same CI, as i have all of my mom and dad's CI.

I do have several CI dutch ovens too, and i still enjoy using them...  I bet you will love your's too!

Cast Iron FTW!  I've been using CI for 30+ years now, and I've still got my originals and my wife's mother's originals.

Best way I found to mother them good is to fill `em with whatever oil you prefer and deep fry some stuff in them.  Once mothered well, you have a better surface than any non-stick johnny-come-lately pan.  As you well know, clean them only with water and a stiff brush.

I've got a 20 qt (non-legged) dutch oven that I use for oven fried chicken on the grill that just can't be beat when feeding huge family get-togethers.

Enjoy your new dutch oven now, and for decades to come.

ATLAW. We have nothing but cast iron skillets and a 6 qt dutch oven. We used to use the do on the old wood stove when we still had it. Cooked many a pot of beans, chile, soups, stews, roasts, etc in it. We have never baked in it but would like to try it. Seems like bread or biscuits would stick without a bit of oil. Please post and tell how your biscuits turn out, and how you did it. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Shoot P'man, I'm not the person to ask about bisquits!  Look back a ways in the forum.  We had a long discussion on making busquits and Dee talked about his DO experience.  He's the one you need to ask about that!   ;D

Lemme see if I can find that thread...  :-\

ATLAW. HEH, I know how to make them but I thought you said YOU were going to bake biscuits in a DO, I just wanted to know how they turn out and how you did it.  I believe I could bake bread in the DO just setting it out in the yard, it was 106 an hour ago. Maybe Dee will pop in and tell a bit more about baking bread and biscuits in the DO. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Gettin' on towards fireplace weather.  You can use your DO in there.  (think about it...fire, coals, a nice flat space)

Try finding a Boy Scout competition in cooking.  Those kids turn out great meals using dutch ovens and will fall all over themselves showing off.  You will find they have recipes for things you never thought you could make in a dutch oven.  If you don't watch out though they will use you as a judge in the competition.  This is a no bull setup, the kids train at home but when they hit the campsite, they must do it all without adult help.  My wife and I taught a lot of kids to cook, we also taught them how to clean up, do dishes, sanitation and responsibility.

Another great idea from the world of GBO!   ;D  I think I'll check around and see if we have any such goins-on in this area.  To bad I don't like kids...  :-\

They don"t stay kids.  Right now there is a Career Army Sgt. in the sand box.  Riding in the top of his left boot is a Gerber Mk 1.  I bought that blade at Benning back when Gerber started making them.  We helped train him for Search and Rescue with the Sheriffs Explorer Post.  We tried to help by teaching the mundane things, cooking, field sanitation, tracking, unit coordination, radio communictions, first aid, responsibilty and leadership.  He has turned down Warrant Officer training and a shot at OCS.  He will have twenty years in by his 39th birthday.  He came back to tell us thank you, when he was a three striper.  Out of those we trained there are now 18 men and women we know of in the service, 2 fire fighters, three cops, 6 (I think) in education, 1 makes movies, and four or maybe 5 professional chefs.  Not too shabby for the small amount of time we invested.  Oh yeah, 11 scouts in our sons boy scout troop made Eagle when we were active, one of them was our son.

That's the good part about them... some of them actually turn human!   ;D
