Stevens .25-21
« on: November 26, 2003, 02:40:05 PM »
Took the new Stevens 44 1/2 Schuetzen rifle out to the range for some load testing. Loaded up a Liberty 86 gr cast lead bullet, with 5.5 grs of Unique, and another same bullet, with 5.0 grs of Unique.
The gun performed well with both loads, and I didn't see any measureable difference between the two.
With the factory vernier/globe combination, the groups were about 1.5" at 100 yds. With the old Lyman 438 4x long tube scope, the groups were under 1".
Pretty happy with the results, but I'm reloading with some 102 gr Liberty bullets, to do more testing over the holiday weekend.
Love this old Schuetzen rifle and caliber!

You have a fine rifle for a great cartridge.  I have a thing for the old style single shot rifles and the old cartridges, they just seem to have a character to them that I like.  It is amazing how well lead alloy bullets can shoot.  I enjoy making a fine bullet that performs well in my rifles.  Enjoy!!

Thanks 38-55! I was back out to the range again today! Took the Stevens Schuetzen Junior, along with my .38-55 Schoyen Ballard Schuetzen rifle, another Stevens Schuetzen .22lr, and a Ballard #4 in .45-70. The Schoyen outshoots them all, but the Stevens is right there with it, and it's all factory original! Not bad considering how good the Schoyen barrels always were.
The Stevens is such a neat gun to shoot, with it's double set triggers, and the mild recoil. Except for the report, it's like shooting my Stevens .22 rimfire Schuetzen rifle!

Have a CPA 38-55. With the a pope style 310gr, breach seated, this thing will shoot.  Also shoot Sharps and High Wall, what fun.
