Which mold for a rem 700ml?
« on: June 23, 2010, 07:34:09 PM »
This is my first muzzle loader, a stainless synthetic M700ml. Around here we don't have an extended season for hunting and I have lots of other hunting guns, this one will be strictly target for now. So that said I'm looking for my options for a .50 mold to make use of some of this lead I have around here and get started shooting this thing.

Will the accuracy be much less with a patched ball compared to something like the Lee R.E.A.L bullets?

I could do a .44 or .45 saboted pistol bullet too I guess but I was kind of wanting to see those big .50 holes if I could.

What do you guys suggest?

Thanks
Mike

Since you're talking target shooting (100 yards or less I assume) I suggest you buy a box of .490 Hornady or Speer balls and give them a try with 60 to 70 grains of black powder or Pyrodex.  If they shoot well for you, you can then get a Lee .490 ball mold and have at it.  Cheap shooting and lots of fun.

My 700ML shoots terrible with balls. Twist is too fast, I believe. It does very well with maxiballs, Lee modern mine' bullets, and REAL bullets all sized to .501. However, it is at its best so far with the Lee C-501-440-FN bullet designed for the 500 S&W. These are sized down to .494, paper patched with 9# onionskin to .501, and loaded by throwing the powder charge, seating a card wad, wiping the bore to the card, then loading the bullet. The charge so far is 100gr. FFg KIK powder, and groups are around MOA with the issue barrel sights. I can't see any better than that so no telling what the ultimate accuracy is at this point.

Try the Lee R.E.A.L. bullet I have cast them for years and used them in several guns one being a friends 700ML . The friend had a TC mold but his gun shot the Lee bullet better , for what its worth .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

My 700ML was a tack driver with a .490 ball, pillow ticking patch, and 80 grains of Pyrodex.  I would deer hunt with that load in a second.

I'm not sure but it was pretty easy to load.  It was ticking I bought at Walmart.

My two 700's like the knight 260 gr. all lead bullet with knight sabot. It makes a hole you will think is a .50.I would never use a round ball unless it was my only option. They are accurate, but not the best killers.

My Rem 700 ML shoots the Lee R.E.A.L. (I think it's 332 grains but I'd have to look.) best with an over powder wad and 80 grs of RS ffg. But it took me months to get an accurate load. And if someone hadn't mentioned the wads I'd have never found it. It shoots round ball ok, but the conicals do better, accuracy wise. I bought the Lee mold that casts both the conical and the ball so I could play with both.
