As to the BP thing, I've checked into some "canary in the mine" websites. Followed a few links, enough to get a solid, basic idea of what is being said. To sum it all up, think of the BP mess as an underwater Mt. St. Helens in our backyard. One author said it pretty well when he remarked that it was like sticking in a straw with no idea of how to cork it.
Dudes, do we have the technology to control volcanos? Cuz if we don't, (think 100,000 lbs. of pressure per sq. in.) something is gonna come out one way or t'other. Everyone has made a big deal of BP going down a mile when the fact of the matter is---that is just getting to the ocean floor. Another fact: oil companys and those who are experienced in fixing seafloor blowouts regularly work with that problem. So do many, many other people who regularly go much deeper!!! The depth that is ignored by everyone is the fact that BP then drilled 22,500' farther into the crust. THAT'S FOUR MILES ON DOWN. The geology of that region seems to be layers of mixed limestone, sandstone and shale interspersed with a sand/gravel mix and pockets of crude or various charming volcanic gases. The seafloor now has ground deformation with attendant cracking, along with 3000-something parts-per-million of that volcanic gas which killed those African people near that lake----- and oil is still spewing out--even faster now.
According to these behind-the-scenes scientists, they're scared of something like Krakatoa blowing sometime this summer and they're scared of what BP & Obama are going to do to them if they don't keep their mouths shut! (We all know Obama is a Marxist wanna-be dictator. From history, we all also know what they do to folks in the way of shutting you up and discrediting you.)
Krakatoa type volcanos actually send out 2 tsunami's. The first, when the hole blows out then the pressure "equalizes". At that point the real problems begin because now cold sea water starts mixing with whatever is still coming out and replacing what was in the underground cavity. No problem there----except that COLD sea water doesn't do so well in contact with HOT rock at 4 miles down. It tends to create a really big hole called a caldera. (You guys know anything about Yellowstone? Let's drill there.)
From many different canaries, the size of the mess BP created and the fact that the continental shelf is so close will do 3 things:
1) Rain oil all over everybody's parade (homes, CROPS, etc.) by heating things up thereby creating bigger hurricanes. Visitors to the area are reporting that it is much "hotter" temperature-wise. This is because the oil is creating a thin layer over the water and reflecting heat.
2) Create a "tsunami" of gas. I don't think I have to remind anyone that there has been already several reports of fisherman being hopitalized.)
3) A tidal wave of unthinkable proportions. Stats range anywhere from 80-200' moving at the speed of a jet liner (400-600 mph) which is expected to cross the entire state of Florida (no mountains) and come into the rest of the Gulf states equally far.
So why hasn't anyone said anything about this? MASS PANIC. Where are several million people gonna go? How do you evacuate entire states? Notice, however, at the relocation of National Guard and elite sea rescue training units way inland
This is a very real possibility folks. Looks like the rubber might hit the road on this one. Hope not. Chippy, with a "just in case" attitude, you might want to pre-load your BOB and keep your emergency radio turned on low so you can listen to it in the background. One final question: would one of you sell me & mom an emergency hand-cranked/battery radio and for how much? We don't know much about shopping for those things and don't want to get taken by a *sharp* salesman.
PS....I didn't mention that if this volcano does blow, it is likely to finish cracking the Mississippi fault which meets the seafloor in this area.
