Picked one of these up not long ago. 1st 1911 It seams to eat everything I feed it so far including gold dots & golden sabers. Never new what I was missing now I am in for it

You picked a good one to start with.  I've had mine for some time.  If has never given me any problems.  It is more accurate than I am.  Shoots great.  I am not going into the "best gun for the money" hype.  It is a good weapon.  Hope you enjoy your Tac.

I've considered purchasing the Tactical Compact model, but am uncertain of how reliable a 1911 would be as a CCW weapon. I love the 1911's fit & feel, trigger pull and accuracy.

I'm a revolver fan myself but the fact is that among those who carry a gun they actually expect to use (cops and military) it is almost 100% autos. Autos are as reliable as the ammo they are fed. The 1911 autos may not be quite as reliable as some much newer designs but 99.99% is good enough for me ( that would be one malfunction in 10,000 rounds). In truth, I've had far more malfunctions with double action revolvers than with most of the auto loaders I've owned. Now any individual gun may have some problems that need to be addressed and all guns have ammo preferences but with a good gun and ammo it likes reliablity just is not an issue.

If I was afraid of a semi-auto I would not carry one.
I think confidence in choice of weapons goes a long way how you approach carrying.
I have, in the past, had some consternation with 1911's and it is the reason I own Sigs.
In the last 10/15 years I have learned that it is very possible to develope a 1911 which provides every bit of confidence that a revolver can.
The weapons I own are reliable and I would carry them into any situation where my life hangs in the balance, due too their performance.
That is just me. It cost more, but in the cost comes some amount of pride of ownership.
Do what makes you comfortable---I do.

 WHat magazine came with yours? Mine came with an ACT and I have had issues. A wilson solved most,but it still prefers Honrady XTP. Golden sabers work ok,but gold dots dont work so great.

 1911s are tempermental. With a good magainze (I prefer wilsons,others have other opinions) and the "right" ammo,they are reliable. The trick is finding what works in your gun. I find in mine its Wilson magazines with hornady XTPs. Others have different experiences,but the key is to find a combination (there of course is no "the" combination,there are plenty of choices) that work ,shoot enough rounds through it (get it broken in with 200 or so rounds before you make any judgements btw) and then stick with it.

 You can send it in for one of Arnels "famous" (at least among RIA owners) tuneups. They tell me that after they do their thing that it will feed any hollow point ammo and be dead reliable. People who have had it done say wonderful things about it. I think it costs somewhere between 100 and 150 dollars (I don't recall the exact number). Other gun smiths of course can do the same thing,but make sure you have someone you can trust. Ive heard horror stories about people who call themselves gun smiths destroying peoples 1911s. I would just send it to the service center in NV and have them do it. The price is good and everyone who has had it done has nothing but praise for them. Im debating having it done myself. Mine works great,but it sure would be nice to shoot any kind of hollow point I wanted to.

I have an Armscor Tactical (same as the RIA just prettier finish) and my son has an RIA Tactical he carries as his duty weapon.  We have found that they perfer either Novak or Mec-gar mags.  Wilsons are alright, but the cheap mags are a waste of money.   In my younger days I did a lot of Competition shooting and these RIA/Armscor 1911s are as good as any out of the box guns I've ever shot.  Here is a video clip my wife took of me a few weeks back shooting my Armscor.

There really is no trick to a reliable 1911----A good reliable smith.
I use a fellow by the name of Vandenberg.
He knows his way around a pistol.
When you get it back, just shoot the snot out of it---with any ammo.
Cost? Depends on what is needed in his opinion or what you ask for.
Mags!! If they don't  work it is generally a feed lip concern and a little---LITTLE--- bending, one way or the other fixes the concern.
Define little: 1/1000th or so.

I have been "blessed" with a RIA Tactical. It has not endeared itself to me. I've beat it up enough in previous posts, so I'll stop at that.

I like my mil spec model.  So far its been reliable and accurate.  I've since mounted a Burris Fastfire ll on it.  Its the gun on the right in the pic.
