Older German Drilling Chokes
« on: June 25, 2010, 04:41:03 PM »
I just purchased a German Drilling from the 1930's which has a full full choke.  Based on comments from DrillingMan, I am going to have the chokes expanded.  What chokes should I go with?

Based on comments from DM I understand a German Full from the 1930's was made for different powder.  So I am game for expanding the chokes.

Not really a different powder, Doug.  The ammo today has pretty much everything different!  The shot is harder, wads are better, even the hulls are better with a better gas seal...

I think you need to figure out what game you will be hunting, and what ammo you want to use in your drilling, and then go with chokes that have the best chance of working with that choise.  OR, do what i did, and have choke tupes installed...   :)

I am really torn.  The traditionalist side of me wants to have the chokes opened but the practical side sees the value in tubes.   UM....

It was a VERY easy decision for me...  I bought my drilling to USE, not collect...  I have would bought one in a much higher grade in near new condition "if" i was worried about collecting it.

If you measure the bbl before the choke ( from forcing cone to choke  would be good ) then any good choke man can tell you where to start . A mod choke in one tube may shoot IM in another since the choke is relative to the bore mesurement. Also when changing a choke its more involved than a good reaming there are other things involved in the shape of the choke . Have you considered screw in chokes ? If so a company with alot experince who stands behind their work would be best . Briley would be a good one . The install on a double gun requires alot of experince to regulate right a tube installed off would make the gun almost useless .
Tubes may be easy but consider the added weight to an already forward heavy gun.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
