To load or not to load?

Hello everyone,
  I don't have alotta cast bullet knowledge so here I am asking questions again. I have a bottle full of Lyman 6mm cast bullets.  They measure .246".  I have heard that cast bullets should be slightly oversize, but is that too much? Have these bullets been sized yet?

Load   --- will only cost a few primers and a litttle powder....3 1/2 gr of  unique   --is alway a good start for small cast bullets...  shoot up to 50 yard EZ
     I like to hold the powder against the pimer by packing one square of toiletpaper and pack it tight with a allen  wrench ---will help get a uniform bang with a small charge.....
You didn't say if they are gas checked or not...

The worst thing that can happen is you shoot them to hot and they lead your barrle.... and a full night of brushing  out lead ---I hate that !

I'm working with a 25-06,,,,,  80gr pointed Lyman mold ,, and  just found  a 135gr rn (oddball mold)
anyway the 80 gr likes 5.2  unique    ... but going to try a slower powder for the 135 -- H110 or 4759
I shoot a lot at about 1400 fps ( 30 cal )-- work out to 100 yards nicely and EZ on me and the gun at less then 15 cents each....   A 2 X 20 box of .308 is a $  6 fun time
 I need to get some  .25 cal gaschecks so I can get them shooting 1800- to 2000 fps....

Make sure they are lubed in the gooves   --- Lee alox works good  if you want to shoot them  --as cast

They don't have gas checks. I plan to use Trail Boss powder and no fillers. I intend to pan lube them with Alox.  I just hope to spend less time cleaning the lead out and more time shooting.

Sounds like a good plan...


I have a question-- since you shoot 45-70,,, how does a handi 45-70  do with cast at 1000 to1400 fps... since that is what seem to work for me ... Or can you shoot faster with the larger slug..I hope to get that barrel next

I have had excellent results shooting a cast hollow-point at 1100fps from my 45-70 Handi rifle. It is easy on the shoulder and very accurate. I have even used it to shoot a few starlings out to 60yds. I have a Burris scope with their ballistic-plex reticle. I know exactly where to hold with different bullets/loads and distances.
