Peep sights for TCR '83 Aristocrat?
« on: June 27, 2010, 04:42:01 PM »
Does anyone know if there are peep sights such as Williams WGRS series that will mount on a TCR '83?

I saw a TCR rifle at a gunshow that had a weaver base mounted into the 4 scope mount holes and then had a Williams flat based sight, I believe it was the model for the BAR/BLR mounted onto the scope base.  The front sight was a lite-site that replaced the bead in the dovetailed base.  Looked a little odd, but seemed it would work A-OK and not be too expensive a rig to gin up.

I recently received an NECG peep sight for a weaver base to try.  It's a nicely made site and would almost work.  I would have to raise the front sights a little more (~1/16"+) to compensate.  Unfortunately, my barrel shoots quite a ways out of windage center.  It shoots accurately, just off center too much out of adjustment.  There was not enough windage adjustment in the NECG to compensate.

I picked up a Williams WGRS sight for my Encore and have been doing some estimations with my TCR barrel.  Assuming a thin flat base, It would require even more height out of the front sight to compensate, than the NECG, but seems to have enough windage adjustment for my needs.  Mounting it on the TCR monoblock would be difficult. Unfortunately it would have to be mounted right against the monoblock.  A weaver base would add even more height (too much).

I think I may have found a custom solution.  I am going to order one of these "PeepRib Muzzleloader Peep Sight" and have a friend machine the bottom flat (to the thickness of a weaver base), trim the length and drill/countersink for mounting to the monobock.

I have also ordered a couple of front sight options to raise it another .075" or .250".  Between the two something should work.

I really like peep sights. Only had one on a Marlin .45-70 which I bought aroung 40 years ago. My son borrowed it so I temporarily put a scope on it and it was no more accurate than with the peep sight. During the past month or so I fixed up an old Sheridan are rifle for my grandsons. In the process I had a peep sight added which is a big improvement over the open sights it had when I used it as a kid. It is easy to shoot accurately with the peep. I've also thought about a peep sight for a TCR but never went through with it. If I do, I will have a gunsmith make up a bar to screw to the top of the monoblock similar to the Leupold scope mounts and have it cantelever back over the action. I think it's better if a peep is a little closer to the eye rather than forward like an open rear sight. I know that with a rifle barrel the Leupold mounts are supposed to cantelever over a rifle barrel, but I put them on backwards since they look better. However, they need to have a little metal milled off in order to fit that way or the action will not close. This is not a problem with shotgun barrels as the monoblock is higher. Anyway, below is a photo and I would do the same for a peep sight and probably use one of the ghost ring peep sights which are expensive but very compact. Also, I think a post front sight is better with a peep than is a bead front sight.
