Rain
« on: June 28, 2010, 05:55:44 AM »
Well we missed what was supposed to be an 80% chance of rain last night and from the looks of the long range forecast we will not get any for the next 10 days..  Things are getting downright crunchy around here in the MO Ozarks.  Fortunately the last owner of our property was a well driller and originally bought the land because it had the best supply of underground water in Dent county.  He also had frost frees installed all over.  I recently bought a 'weeper' hose and so my garden is OK.  Still I sure wish it would rain.  If this keeps I may be forced to wash my car. ::)

Her job washing the car or watering the garden? :D  The weather forecast is 'possibly' for some rain this Sunday. It is so dry here that I wouldn't have to mow the lawn if it wasn't for the narrow leaf plantain seed stalks.  Maybe I can get old mom nature to run the lawn mower too. :D

Was dry as a bone up here till a few weeks ago.  Since then we have gotten over 5" of rain.  Another 19" and we will be back to where we were a couple of years ago.

We were bone dry until last night. The sky opened up and dropped bucketfulls, with some magnificent thunder and lightening. This morning I swear my greens, beets and corn grew 4inches overnight. I'm truly impressed.

Natural water from the sky always seems to be better than ground water on the garden.  It is overcast here today in the Ozarks and the forecast is for a 40% chance of rain for each of the following days.  Of course that means a 60% chance it won't rain.  I just checked my garden this morning and got 1 tomato and several nice zucchinis and one zucchinizilla that hid for several days from me.  It looks like I need to make zucchini bread today.  We have had a real bad infestation of Japanese beetles this year and today I found the first June beetle.  At least There are no squash bugs yet...dang I wish I hadn't said that! :D

It's just starting to get dry here, and as i have spring fed ponds to water from, i decided to water my back garden for the first time this year.  So, out i go to the shop to find my little sump pump, the bucket i use with it, and a garden hose...

With everything now at hand, i hook up the hose, and throw the pump/bucket in the shallow end of one of my ponds,

With an extension cord from the shop, i plugged the pump in, and i have a pond full of water to use...

And here's the tomatoes waiting for a drink...  They are doing very good in the rich compost i'm growing them in,

I just leave everything in place, and plug the pump in as needed...

Been either to dry or to wet in Kansas. Three weeks ago my lake was a bit high as you can see. Usually the water line is about 20 feet in front of the cabin.
