"SHOW US YER RACK"--yer barrel rack that is....
« on: June 29, 2010, 01:07:54 PM »
I'm starting to get an accumulation of 12-16 inch Contender barrels .All are now scoped and I'm starting to have storage problems-laying on their sides in different places/positions etc.... How do you guys store your barrels and if in racks-- how bout some pics of the racks-homemade or otherwise..... If ya have plans left from when ya made them;any copies ?

Let's see what you've got.    Thanks in advance. Shane

I made a drawer instead of a rack.  It goes on the top shelf of my safe.

I figured out about the best spacing for my barrels with scopes, since all could potentially wear one.  Then I used my router to put a channel for the barrel to rest in and a slot all the way through for the lug.  There is room here for six 10" barrels and four 10" to 14" barrels.  I used good quality heavy duty drawer glides which provide full extension.

The rise at the back of the frame is so I don't have to fasten it to the safe.  It just sits on the top shelf and the rise rests against the roof, preventing it from tilting when all the way out.  The drawer and the sides are 3/4" MDF and the rail across the back is oak.

I spray painted black the parts that would be exposed and then covered the drawer with black felt.

Here is what it looks like in the safe.

As mentioned, the drawer extends all the way out but I only pulled it out part way for the picture.

Tell me about it.  I built this and thought I was golden with a couple of empty spaces for "future".  Well the future is now and I've added four more pistol barrels and two carbine barrels!!!

My safe door was set up for the velcro holsters, but I removed the holsters and put 2" wide velcro strips (hook and loop back to back on one end) and made loops to hang the barrels in. I have 11 barrels on the door, 9 with scopes and 2 without. The door on my safe is wide enough for 15" scoped barrels. I also made a shelf much like one Curtis made, but mine dosen't slide out (his is better). I can put 8 barrels on it. I redid the other shelves and put a slotted barrel rest on the shelf so you can set handguns upright and my safe is deep enough for my contenders and encore with 14 and 15" barrels. I also made velcro labels for each barrel to cut down on the confusion. I'll try to post pictures if I can figure that out, better with hands than brain.    Stan

My barrel rack is also much like Curtis's if you insert "crude" in front of mine.  Very nice job there Curtis.  My safe must be shallow, cause a scoped 14" barrel won't fit in mine.

Thanks for the kind words there, Walt.  I just love to build stuff, that's all.  Any excuse will do.  My safe is an "American Eagle" by Cannon safe.  I bought it on sale for $599 at Academy Sports a couple or three years ago and I'm glad I did.  I'm now seeing it for $799 "on sale".

I'd like to have a second shelf below this one, but my shotguns are too tall to allow it.  Maybe I need another smaller safe for the shotguns so I can accomodate everything.  I've got a whole spare bedroom dedicated to my shooting and reloading hobby and I'm running out of room!!  I guess it's time for some more planning.

Where did you get those "socks" P.A.?  I notice that they are marked by caliber.  I like it.

The socks are 'Bore-store' from Midway. They come in various sizes, and they have wide ones for scoped barrels. $6-7, I think. I had my seamstress shorten two 10 inch soks for my short [6 1/2] barrels. These are good for static storage, but a too feeble to transport unless isolated. The caliber markings are felt tip pen.

At first I got one and an extra, then two more extra, then five more. I now have 13, I may need extra.

Please excuse the poor pictures - the lens kind of distorted and bowed the pictures.  I think you can get the idea.  I took a nice clear (no knots) 4 1/2" wide board, drilled barrel diameter size holes every 2 7/8", split the board down the center of the holes, then notched every other 1/2 hole for the barrel lugs to make my rack.  Barrels can be stored both directions to save space.  The rack was sanded, stained and multiple coats of polyurethane were applied so the wood doesn't draw moisture and damage the barrels.   Nothing real fancy, but easy to make with only standard tools and will hold 20 scoped barrels across a 38" wide shelf.  The height of the rack can be varied as you want but if you have forends for each barrel and store barrels with the forends on, make sure it is deep enough that the forend will not hold the barrel up out of the rack.  (My prototype was too shallow for Herrett forends).  The bulk of my scopes have 32mm objectives, if you have bigger scopes you may want to widen the spacing just a little.  I did not attach the boards in my safe, a couple times a year I flip the shelf over to keep the wonderful particle board shelves from bowing under the weight.  Also you can double deck if need be.  For the frames I just got some foam pistol racks from Midway to save space.

Made this barrel holder for the top shelf in the gun safe.

Ran out of room so I made this one for the Encore barrels.

Excellent, Jay.  I just recently got into carbine barrels and wondered how I was going to store them.  Looks like my next project is a barrel hanger.  I may go with hardwood instead of UHMW though.  It is hard to sneak home projects onto the mill at work any more.

thanks Curtis.

I think that stuff is acrylic, a friend of mine works at a sign company so he let me dig through the scrap pile for it.
thing was all squared up and polished all I had to do is mill a few slots and drill 2 holes.

Do you have any close up pics of the top of your rack? Where did you order your plastic stock from? Any dimensions for the hanger?

I have one the the plastic gun boxes sold at cabellas/bass pro/sportsmans warehouse - they sell it at a double decker handgun case but you can put too layers of barrels
and it's just a little under 15" wide so you can put 14" barrels in side by side. Two layers with foam between and it's portable. Alternate scope to the right then scope to the left but you loose a spot for a barrel when you do.  Without scopes 5 per layer 10 per box without issue. Oh and if I win the lottery, multiple boxes stack - I throw some of the mositure sucking packets under the bottom layer of foam also a good place to put paperwork about scope settings (ie this load 2.5 inches high at 50, dead on 100 - 3.5 low at 150).

mine looks something like this one.

this one is plano Dimensions:   16.75" x 6" x 14.5"  but I don't see markings on mine.
