Suzuki LT 250 E
« on: June 29, 2010, 07:09:55 PM »
My son got a heck of a deal. He bought me a used 1986 Suzuki LT250E ATV 2 wheel drive. An old man had it and it sat for a couple years. The old man died and his daughter thought the ATV junk. Jason gave $20 and some car stereo speakers for it getting it for roughly $100. He put a new battery in it, sprayed some starting fluid in the carb, and it fired right up. It runs, shifts, and handles like new. Starts as soon as you hit the button. It also has brand new tires on it with the nubs not even worn off. All the plastic is good but it needs a new seat and front brakes. He gave it to me for a hunting rig. I'm going to put a cammo paint job on it and a new seat cover and hit the woods. Being disabled it will be my legs much of the time. It's really a pretty cool ATV. I read a few reviews and guys are saying it has more torque and power than the new Suzuki 250s. Also that many guys are seeking them out to restore they are liked so well. Anyone know anything about this model Suzki?

One word of caution.  The engine sits so far back it can and does start fires real easy.  Grass tends to collect up against the exhaust coming out of the head and starts fires.  I've started many with mine.  So when driving through tall dry grass, keep a look out behind yourself.  Now that is the bad stuff.

I just looked up the 86 LT 250.  It's chain drive and those years did have good torque.  You should only have five gears.  But they are totally adiquate.  Watch out for soft deep mud, and the solid rear axel will tip you fast if you are not careful in really rough stuff.  By all means you need to replace the front brakes, and check the drums, they may be out of tollerance.  Also important to replace the seals on the drums if you can get them.  During the freeze thaw time of the year, you need to make sure water does not get inside the front drums and sit over night to freeze.  If that happens it freezes the shoe and the drum togeather.  Needs to be thawed completely before you attempt to drive it or damage to the front brake system can occure.  Our engines are in the same location, just I have 4WD and shaft drive.  And 3 ranges giving me 15 gears, with differantial lock on front.  I wrote the following before I looked it up on line.

I own an 87 LT250FWD, the four wheel drive version.  I believe it is the same machine I have just without the 4 wheel drive.  Bought it new, and have replaced the head once, due to not changing the oil enough.  Mine has been through the grinder, here in Alaska.  First year I owned it I pulled out a Moose through some of the most gosh awful swamps you ever seen.  It's the only 4-wheeler I have ever owned that has not reared up with me.  I've only tipped it over once, due to it's lower than normal center of gravity.  The independent rear suspension makes it a lot more stable.     I still use mine most years when we have to go in where there is swamps.  I'll put either the wife or my son on the Suzuki and let them cross the swamp.  If there is a covering of grass they can usually make it across.  If not all they have to do is step off and it will crawl on out by itself.  Once across they drag the rest of us through.  Not sure if the two wheel drive had the high, low, super low range?

The plastic on mine is showing it's age, and the abuse of a teenager, but it still runs and gets us in and out.  As for brakes, I'll replace them and then in 6 to 8 weeks they don't exist anymore.  I quite messing with them, just use the gears.

Here's a couple pics of it. It runs like new. Should make me a good hunting rig.   :) My son had been wanting to get me an ATV and couldn't pass this up. It will allow me to hunt at times that I normally couldn't.

Yea, I like that rear rack, a Kolpin gun case fits good across it and in that dip in the sides.  My seat started coming apart like that so I got a seat cover made by kolpin (A little spendy but well worth the cost) and have been using it now for the last four years.  Since mine sits outside 75% of the time it's sun faded now but still gives me something to sit on.

That rig should get you around pretty good.  That is the model I was going to buy back in 1986, then heard Suzuki ws coming out with 4WD so I waited and got the LT4WD.

In 89 when Suzuki came out with the 300 to compete with Honda, all you needed to do was change the jug and piston.  Many of my friends tried to talk me into making the change.  I thought why, I like it the way it is and the 250 has enough power for me.

Jason just told me that actualy he has the grand total of $80 in it. lol All it really neads is the seat covered, which is no biggy because I use to do upholstery, and back brakes. I think I can handle that  :) In the mean time, untill I can get a big enough piece of vinyl I simply wrapped the seat with Gorilla Tape. Hey it works. LOL

Good Deal!!  I used to own the Suzuki 125, and a 50cc. bought them together for $500. I put about 3500 miles on the 125 and my Kids pounded the 50cc to death, as they got older they took over the 125 and dragged a sled and half the neighborhood around on the snow. As we out grew them I sold them to another young Family that got a lot of use out of them as I did. Great machines, indestructible. Enjoy.

Wow, those photos bring back fond memories of riding those Suzuki's.  They were pretty much bomb proof, and I really like the way the older small quads had multiple gear ranges.  That really made the smaller bikes much more capable when it came time to work.

I think it will make me a pretty good hunting rig. Feel like a kid with a new toy.  ;D Heres one more pic. I made some suzuki decals to slap on it. Only thing left to do is get rear brakes and a decent piece of vinyl for the seat.  :)

It is a good size, should be able to manhandle it some
theres some spots you wont be able to go with the 2x4 that the heaver 4x4's shrugg off.
Should get a ball hitch on it.
I once snaked a deer off a timberd side hill useing a simular sized 250 useing a rope off the ball hitch
a better sized rear rim/tire combo would be a +.
Those narrow knobbys were great for digging themselves a hole.

The site given works perfectly for ATVs.  That is why it is on an atv style site.   :o   Tell me what kind of problem you're having and I'll try to straighten you out.  First you have to locate the 17 digit vin.  If you are wanting to know the year of manufacture you need to get the tenth digit and look for it on the given chart.  Or, tell me what the tenth digit is and I'll read the chart to you.

The VIN# is JSAAJ43A, a LT 230 S.

This is not a vin#.  All vin# are 17 digits long and you've only given 8.  The vin is found on a plate usually welded to the lower part of the frame.  Many times they are on the inside of the frame and all but impossible to get to.  Sometimes a mirror and a bright light come in handy.  Most likely the number you have given is either an engine code or a manufacturing code but I can't locate it as either.  The only way to be correct is to locate that 17 digit number.  Without that number I would have concerns of it being stolen.

Very nice. Your son took good care of you. If it were mine, I would upgrade the rear tires to something more aggressive, but that it because of my local hunting spot's mud.  Add a couple additional lights that aim straight, rather than turning with the bars and you are set.

My son was telling me today that all the mid 80's Suzuki quaddrunners he's seen advertised for sale says that they have dual range transmissions. How can we tell if mine does, and if it does, how do you shift back and forth from high and low range?
