Hot lips or steel lips?
« on: June 30, 2010, 05:25:37 AM »
Curious as to which is better for a Ruger 10/22.  What about the new polymer from Tapco? Any good?

Don't know about Tapco, but I had some Butler Creek hotlips and don't consider them in the same ball park as the stock magazine. gave the hotlips to my grandson to play around with.

The factory mag is great but my 10/22 has a factory installed Tapco stock with the adjustable buttstock and looks lame without a high capacity mag.
I have a Butler Creek 25 rnd Hotlips mag that came with the gun but was wanting another mag and wondered about the steel lips and the polymer.

Before the ban I bought several eagle brand mags (hot lips clone) that were cheaper made than the hot lips but more durable. I think the ban was in 94'. I sold them all off when they were so high except 2. They are still running today with several cases through them. The lips are visibly worn but no ftf yet. On one I broke the little helper thing that engages the stock magazine release, from dropping about 30 foot into a creek bed. As well as the little tab that makes the two press together. Still feeds great. Just have to push the mag release instead of the helper thingy. And tape for 2 mags together. Some folks have good luck with them, some not. If you can stay with 10, the stock rotary mag is the best. Cleanable, adjustable and rebuildable. At some point the hi cap will fail then they have to be thrown away. When I got mine they were all getting swiped up because of the impending ban.  Would have bought steel lips but they were out everywhere. Never heard too much good about the plastic hot lips. I haven't seen the eagle ones in years for the good plastic ones.

I now have 8 steel lips with very few rounds so can't comment on their ability. But the general consensus was steel over plastic for the hi caps rotary over all if you can handle 10.

The BC hotlips I had was only a ten rounder, but they were stacked so the clup curved well below the stock. I would imagine the steel lips would be OK. On the other hand, for multiple rounds have you thought of epoxying two Ruger clips base-to-base..gives you 20 rounds with 10 of them carried below the stock.

Also there are cubes to attach 4 rotaries together. Midway used to put the rotaries on sale regular for half price.

After posting yesterday I went looking on the web for info on the polymer. Found some aluminum ones and polymer ones at Tactical Innovations that are both capable of being taken apart and cleaned. Reading the reviews it seems folks buy these by the dozen nearly. Well, not quite but at 35 bucks a mag most folks are said they had anywhere from 3 to 8 of these and love them.
