Possible, anyone doing this??
« on: June 30, 2010, 06:04:38 PM »
Is it possible to load .45 caliber BP sabots into a .45LC case? These bullets would be about .40 cal and the outer sabot should measure close to .452"

Thanks, Dinny

I would be scared to do it in a revolver for fear of tearing something up and plus a crimp to hold the bullet in place would be useless.  In a single shot pistol or rifle I can't think of a reason why it shouldn't work.    Dave

buddy did some testing of 30 cal bullets in sabots in the 500 linebaugh years ago so im sure you can get it to work in your rifle. One thing to keep in mind is sabots in rifles tend to be thicker and harder then the ones we use in muzzle loaders to shoot 44 and 45 cal bullets and i dont know how theyd hold up to high velocitys. I also played with sabots in my 3030 shooting .22 bullets and had it shooting groups under 2 inch at a 100 yards.

If one is using them in a single shot rifle where lack of crimp is not a problem, they should work fine. There's no way possible to get enough
powder in that case to equal the amount of powder used in a Savage 10MLII using smokeless powders. Use a little slower burning powder,
however, such as H110 or IMR4227.....not the real fast burning pistol powders.

Yes, But why?
The black powder Sabots were disigned so you can launch a modern Pistol bullet out of your front stuffer.
The Sabots are not made for Ulta Hi Speeds.  So thinking you are going to launch a 158 JHP .357 round with a sabot at 35 Reminton Speeds is not going to happen.
I have some of the sabots for my .58 so I could shoot 452 300 Grain bullets out of it and match 45-70.
With 60 grains of powder, the sabots would work, with 70+ grains, I was finding broken sabots 50 - 70 yards down range and may or may not have hit the 24" square target at 100 yards.
OH and I had plastic in the rifeling.
I think if you want to launch a .357 projectile faster there are better ways.
Take a 357 Mag Barrel and ream the back end to 357 AUTO Mag (44 Auto Mag Necked to 357)  44 Auto is a 308 cut to 44 mag length
There are 454 -40 and necked versions of 44 Mag necked to 357 but i can not think of the names of them right now.
I am sure you could do a 45 Colt to 357 Wild cat to meet what you want and then just ream a 357 Barrel.
Or you can use a 357 Maxi, or 35 Rem to do the dame thing.

I tried it in a 500 S&W mag handi rifle

It won't work

The sabot wouldn't handle the pressures involved and would "blow out" (as evidenced by recovered sabot confetti) and if you backed down the pressure enough for the sabot to work you lost any advantage over normal caliber loadings you might have theoretically gained

I know you did not ask me but I was using Pyrodex R/S and the same thing was happening to me at 70+ grains = to 87.5 and more of black.
I use 64 Grains of R/S = to 80 of black for my .50 with round ball that weioghs about 180 grains.
