When did Mossberg offer the 38" barrel on the 500 series shotguns?

Can't give you a time line of this date to that date. I bought one in the late 80's new. If you are wanting a long one gunbroker has the barrels and complete guns a lot of times. There were also 30 and 32" barrels. The 38 makes a super quiet shotgun. If you are trying to date one. I would say I picked mine up in 87 or 88.

Marlin had a 120 before that available with a 38 or 40.

I have one that I picked up a couple years back. I just wasn't sure of when they were offered. It is a bad boy at turkey shoots.

That is a LONG barrel!
It would be hard to learn and bad swing habits with that piece of pipe.
I recall reading about a guy who would show up at the Grand American every year. He was wheelchair-bound as a result of debilitating arthritis and wasn't able to shoulder a gun. He had a Remington 870 with about 60" of barrel that he would mount down at his waist. He could track the targets with the muzzle and was pretty good with the setup. Fellow shooters described the sound as just a "thump".

I have a 30' that I used on ducks in years past but can only imagine what packing something longer than that might be like. :)

in the old lead shot water fowling days the long barreled tight choked guns where good for sky busting geese  in the day I had a 32"full a 28"mod and a slug barrel for my 500 I was ready for anything LOL  I still prefer fixed choke barrels but they can be hard to find..
