Double Action 22LR/22Mag combo
« on: July 02, 2010, 10:20:29 AM »
Does anyone know of any other companies besides Charter Arms that manufacture a pistol that has the removable cylinders to switch between 22LR and 22Mag? Thanks for any help

kmj,
I don't know of any other current manufacturers, but, If you watch the auctions, there are some really nice H&R convertibles that come up for sale regularly.
A few different models, mostly model 676, and 686.
676, casecolored, sa/da, windage adj rear sight, fixed front.
686, same as 676, except has fully adj rear sights, and target style ramp front sight.
Model 649 same as 676 except blued.
Model 650 same as 649 except nickel plated.
All have single action style loading / unloading.
Well built, good shooters.
They haven't been made for quite some time, but, you can still find some really nice ones at reasonable prices.
Here's a few pics.

I believe S&W made some model 48s with extra 22lr cylendars fitted to them.

High Standard used to make .22lr/.22mag DA revolvers.  They had several models, all held nine rounds and the cylinder swung out for loading like most DA revolvers.  I have one with a 6.5" barrel and adjustable target sights.  The .22lr cylinder is fluted and the .22mag cylinder is non-fluted.   It's a great shooter but I have put it into semi retirement for fear that if I break something I would not be able to find replacement parts.  That and it's value has more than doubled since I bought it about 20 years ago.

Brett,
I like the High Standards also, but they are tougher to find than the H&R's.
I especially like the 9 shot capacity, while the H&R convertibles are all 6 shooters.
Here's a pic of my High Sierra, a beautiful little 22 IMO.
One thing I don't like about the High Sierra, is that neither cylinder is fluted, or marked.

I had seen a double action revolver 22LR/22Mag changeable cylinder from Brno.  They looked well made.  I wanted to buy one during a visit to South America; but you cannot bring a handgun without a proper importation and given my short visit, I had to just drool about it.  I can't remember the model name of the revolver but I do remember it was a Brno.

I have done a lot of research on it because I love the .22mag.  What I have found is that MOST of the combo set ups shoot best with the .22mag and poorly with the .22rf.

I keep hearing that, but my Single Six shoots groups half the size with 22LR.  It does like some ammo better than others, but the LR regularly out shoots the mag.  Not that it really matters.  Either one is plenty good for small game and plinking.
