can't decide between 4x or scout scope, any suggestions appreciated.

I use a 1.5x4.5, also on see through rings, and after 30 years or so of using it I believe it is the ideal setup for the thick northern woods, with occasional openings, that I usually hunt in....<><....

I have a 2 X 7 Burris German 3P#4 35mm on my 336 great for heavy woods and sometimes the long shot you get..

What about a 2.5-7X32 scope?
Low power of a scout 2.5 - 3 X for fast snap shots at shot ranges
Medium Power 4-5 X for 50 yard or longer shots
and higher power 6-7X for longer cross field shots on smaller game than deer like a fox or coyote.

I have a Weaver 2.5-7 mounted on a T/C carbine for Javilina and Coyote.
When walking with it I kepp it on 2.5
When sitting over looking a creek or gut pile I keep it on 3-5 depending on the foliage
and for sitting on a hill over looking longer 100 Yard + shots I keep it on 7X

For about $160 you can have a Burris 4X20 Timberline at about 9 oz. it's light and has all the magnification you need.

My 336 has a Bushnell Trophy multi-reticle red dot (I use the cross reticle) on it. I didn't go for see-through rings for once because... I can't really see the rear sight on that gun. So it sits on a weaver rail. I killed a running deer which surprised me crashing out of the brush last year. I like it. Use it as my 'woods gun' although it's a little weird having a Star Wars scope on a Cowboy gun...

I really like the idea of a fixed 4 power though. I haven't had the CR2032 battery fail in my red dot but I think about it some. That Burris 4x for $160 sounds good, I guess my other choice in a trad scope would be one of those new Redfields in 2-7x33 for like $130.

I use a receiver sight on most of my lever guns. They balance better without a scope.

If your eyes are"good" than you might consider a ---peep sight.

If you really want a scope, then I`d say a low power would do just fine.

I`ve got an old Weaver 4X on my Marlin 336.

I like the Weaver scopes.
I have a K6 6X38 on a little 22Mag and really like it.
Clear and no guessing on settings to guess distance.

If you're still following along, Trapper 57, I'll offer this.......

Way back when, I bought a Super 14 Contender in 7 X 30 Waters (and 22LR, 22 Hornet, and .223) and scoped it with a nice long eye relief Leupold. It was a lot of fun to shoot. The problem was that it wasn't very much fun to hunt with.

For me, it was the long eye relief scope that spoiled the joy, more than anything else. You see, early in the morning, when the sun was creeping over the mountains low on the horizon, I found I couldn't see heck of a lot through my scope, due to the low angle sunlight and distance between my eyes and the occular lens. At the most critical time, when I really needed a sharp sight picture, I didn't have one at all.

It would seem to me that a "Scout Scope" set-up would be much like my scoped Super 14 Contender experience, so I wouldn't personally go that route.

I have a peep sight on my 336. I like the peep because it allows accurate aiming over the distances that I want to shoot, coupled with rapid target acquisition. It works about as well for me as low powered scopes do, but doesn't detract from the 336's fine shotgun-like balance and dynamic handling. With the peep, there are no lenses to fog, get blurred from driving rain or snow, or get scratched, or get dusty. A 336 fitted with a peep still handles and carries like a levergun should, and retains the scabbard-friendly profile the type is famous for. These things are important to me and handy to have.

So for me, my choice in sights for a 336 is peep all the way, with a low-power standard eye relief scope being a very distant second-place, open irons being out of the question due to my middle aged eyesight, and a "scout style" long eye relief scope set-up not even meriting consideration.

Trapper,
reconsider those see through mounts. For optimum performance you want the scope mounted as low as possible so that you can get a good cheek weld on the comb of the stock.

If you are worried about scope damage, get removable rings. My choice would be Weaver aluminum base with low aluminum rings. This will also help to keep the weight down.

those see thru mounts are popular in certain areas. see alot of them at shops on used guns. every time i pick one up i see just how wiggly they make the the sight picture for me. i'm with scoutman on that. nice low mounts are the best. my 336 has an old redfield 2.75x in low weaver rings, and it fits me great. go to a shop and try a few first

See thru mounts give you the worst of both worlds: restricted view with the iron sights, poor cheek weld with scope. I wonder how many missed/wounded deer result from those mounts...

The only 336 I have scoped is a 336Y. It sports a Leupold FX-II scout scope with Leupold QRW rings and an XS scout mount. I also have my 1895GS set up with the same scope, rings and mount.
I don't shoot it much, mainly bought it for my youngest son for his first centerfire rifle to hunt with. He'll hopefully take his first black bear this fall with it. I started him out with reduced loads using Sierra 125gr FNHP's over 28.5grs on RL-7. Anyway, I'm a big Leupold fan.....these scopes rock!

On my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington, I'm using an older Redfield wide-view 2 3/4X fixed power in a set of Weaver low rings. Fits the Marlin perfect, doesn't unbalance the rifle, has a generous amount of eye relief, and has all the power one would need for a rifle in 35 remington.

I have a 336 TS and it has an older Bushnell 1.5x-4x scope. I keep it set about 2x because the front sight shows in the scope at 1.5x. It is a great combination for walking up deer in the shelterbelts.

Shortly after my parents gave me my 336, my dad mounted some old Bushnell 4X to the rifle using Holden "Ironsighter" scope mounts. And my 11 to 13 year old self really, really HATED shooting that gun. I ditched the "see through" scope mounts before my 14th birthday and never had any burning desire to ever go back to them again. I mounted the old Bushnell to the rifle using Weaver base and mounts. The mount rail I had would let me use the open irons with the scope removed, and it was pretty good at returning to zero once re-installed.

I eventually ditched the Bushnell for some kind of low power Leupold VX-II -like 1.5 to 5X or something. When I bought a horse, I ultimately ditched the Leupold and haven't had a scope on the 336 since. As I mentioned previously, my 336 now sports a peep sight.

I might go back to a scope on my 336, if my eyesight diminishes to the point where I can't shoot the peep well anymore.

But if I do, it'll be a low power unit like the Leupold that I once had on it. It'll be mounted as low to the bore as I can get it. No cheesy "see through" mounts that make your levergun look kinda like a backwoods bubba wannabe M-16 "carrying handle" for me.

Different strokes for different folks and all of that, but since you can get very nice quality optical sights at are utterly reliable and cover a mag range from 1X to 5X in lower powered variables, like a Trijicon brand unit marketed for dangerous game rifles that I recently saw advertised in a gun rag, I really can't see the point of "see through" scope mounts.

If the OP can, then I reckon that's what he ought to go with.

I too think the 336 is best served with either a 1-4X or 1.5-5X variable, the best you can afford. I use these scopes on everything and for hunting, I keep them cranked to their lowest magnification for the largest possible field of view at short ranges.

The most important reason for low magnification is not field of view as most assume but the fact that it allows you to use the scope with both eyes open for much quicker target acquisition. The more powerful the scope, the more disorienting it is to keep both eyes open.
