Glorious, because it is the day of Independence for all Americans from the English Crown.
Tragic, because the 4th of July marks the both highly emotional defeat of Confederate forces at Gettysburg. Strategically, not really much of a loss really. But it was a severe blow to Southern morale. And the quiet surrender of Vicksburg, which is more significant from a strategic view, but is passed over in the public imagination because it had none of the "glory" of Gettysburg. No stand like the Federal left at Little Round Top. No Devils Den. No ill-fated Pickett's Charge.
