It's fun, but hard, to hunt turkeys in big woods. I've killed a few over the years in the woods, mostly when I lived in southern Missouri and hunted the Ozarks. You have to be more patient and wait for them to come to you... it is too noisy and there's not much good cover to move... also, it can be hard to know where they are and where they are going.
The last woods turkey I killed was two years ago in some big river bottom timber in Kansas. It was an afternoon hunt and I just scratched very softly on my slate and scratched leaves with my hands. He came in silent and looking, but not strutting.
