Marlin Guide Gun 45-70 handload recommendations
« on: July 05, 2010, 04:15:11 PM »
I have 100 Remington 405 grain bullets that I'd like to handload for my Marlin 45.70 guide gun and Encore 45.70.  Does anyone have a pet load that works particularly well for their guide gun?  Appreciate your recipes.  Thanks in advance.

blackhawkencore I went though what your going through now last january. I load the rem. 405's with 52.0 grains of IMR 3031 it gives 1750fps out of my guide gun. I tryed going to 54 grains and got no performance gain at all according to the chronograph so I stuck with the 52.0 grains. I know it's not a rhino stomper of a load but it's still generating 2754ftlbs. Alot of folks I talked to said they liked 400-405's best between 1700-1800 fps. I've loaded up some other weights 300's+350's and it seemed to like them best at 1800-1900fps. Hope this helps

I have the same 2 rifles and shoot the same bullets.

From some reading I have done it seems the 405 Rem works best under 1600fps, both my Marlin GG and Encore likes the 405 Rem over Reloader 7 40-42grs.  I have loaded all the way to 47grs and it was accurate, recoil was rough and it was too fast for good bullet performance after reading about how soft the 405 Rem is.

My load right now for both rifles is:

Brass - WW
Bullet - 405 Rem SP
Primer - CCI 200
Powder - RL 7 - 40.0grs
OAL - 2.550"

I get good accuracy @ 47 gr IMR 3031, 405 gr Rem, Rem brass, Win LR primers in my 1895 CB. This load is right in the 1650 fps range.

You don't want to push these bullets too fast, they are not made for it. I am using the Remington 405gr. over 46gr H322 with good results. 1-1.5" @ 100yds if I do my part.

Thanks for all the load recommendations.  Lets hope I get some time and can try them out.  Right now I'm getting ready for muzzloader deer and elk hunts in late october and late november.  Will work on 45-70 loads after all this is done.  Thanks again for the recommendations.  I appreciate it a great deal.

For a pleasant and effictive load try 27 gr. of 2400. It is my best all around Handi load.
