Al Gore was right
« on: July 07, 2010, 01:41:35 AM »
Maybe he really did invent the Internet?

The Northeast faced a fourth day Wednesday of a record-breaking heat wave, after triple-digit temperatures tested power supplies throughout the region and tried the patience and resilience of anyone who dared to venture outside.

While temperatures were expected to moderate some from Tuesday’s peak - which saw a record set at 103 degrees for the day in New York City - utilities warned that the length and intensity of this heat wave was testing the limits of the power grid.

The heat broke several records in the Northeast, as Boston, Providence and Philadelphia all saw triple-digit temperatures Tuesday that eclipsed previous highs.

My bud is an electrician for Con Ed. It is weeks like this that generate the OT to pay for his $300k boat, his plane and his Harley. Con Ed actually pays the guys to stay at work and hangout, eat, sleep, even though they can't possibly work 24x7. Rough on the family, good on the bank account.

When there are record low temperatures in the winter, don't mean nothin'. When there are record highs in the summer, it's the end of the world. Apparently high temps are more profitable.

It is profitable for someone. What happens in that stuff melts, blows up, etc, in the toughest places to get to. Ie, a decades old conduit that was already jammed beyond capacity buried under a busy street. So as a quick fix, it gets routed around. That is emergency work. This propagates scheduled repair work for months. Obviously emergency work remains the priority for the summer. There are very few days a year where Con Ed can do infrastructure upgrades, which are considered high risk and low priority. What the electricians do is take vacation during the time they are supposed to do infrastructure upgrades, as that is when their bosses like them to take off. So the upgrades never get done. What the electricans like to do is work when they can either get 2x OT or get paid to stay at work and do nothing. I believe right now, shifts are extended and they are required to come in 4 hours early and stay 4 hours late, just to be there, not to actually do electrican work. All OT. And they have the option of just staying. If you are like my bud and it takes 2 hours to drive in and 2 hours to drive home, it is simply not worth it to go home, when you can be paid an OT rate to sleep. Then, for the rest of the year, he will schedule repair work, ideally on days or weeks when he can get the highest rate per hour. That tends to be on weekends, so he works mostly weekends and fishes during the week. Not a bad life, unless you are a family man.

  Problem is...unlike other forms of energy, electricity in such quantities, cannot be stored.

  Shaggy;
    You just don't get it...If it's too warm, that's global warming, if it's too cold, that's global warming..if it's too wet, that's global warming..if it's too dry, that's global warming.
   If the chicken crosses the road, it's because of global warming..if the chicken does not cross the road, that's because of global warming !

     Do you get it now ?

  If so, repeat after me.." I will never question the worldwide progressive agenda....communism has failed everytime only because the "right people" were not in charge..Salute and never question the wisdom of the messiah president, soon to be dictator for life"..etc, etc

   ..Now you're starting to get it...right ?

And at the same time there were near record lows in California.  San Diego not getting out of the 60s in July?  The Sacramento Valley only in the low to mid-80s?  Very rare.  But every year we get stories from back east of some gawdawful heat wave.  Why isn't the cool weather in CA (which has now broken and things are getting back to normal) evidence of global cooling?

As Ironglow said, no matter what happens, the alarmists twist it to support the claim of anthropogenic global cooling um ...  warming I mean Climate Change.  And all using the same data sets.

You guys are all way behind the times.  It is no longer called "Global Warming".   The new correct term is "Climate Change".  Which of course is just as lucrative...aah..I mean dangerous in the eyes of the politicos as when it was called "Global Warming".   ;D   So us peons must continue to burn corn squeezings in pint sized automobiles, set our thermostats to a borderline comfortable temperature, and consume only goods made from or packaged in post consumer recycled materials whilst Al Gore and the other elites of the world can do as they please as they cash in on the looming Globa.... oops... Climate Change catastrophe.   ;D

     Right on Brett;
       They started the sneaky transition a couple years ago when even they began to see that the results of their "scientific studies" just could not stand the tests of time and common sense. Then they were caught by an alert hacker, who proved they were lying in the most gross fashion.
   Suddenly they came to the conclusion which those of us who have never joined the "Chicken Little" brigades have been telling them about for many years...CLIMATE CHANGE....
    Sure the climate changes..sun spots erupt..El Ninjo gets active..volcanos erupt and for a million or so other reasons, the climate changes. Probably one of the least of which are mankind's activities...
    ...But still; hard as it is to believe there are some ill-informed folks who are still "drinking the Koolaid".
