3 dot millett red dot?
« on: November 28, 2003, 12:14:08 PM »
you got it! I've got a millett red dot on a S&W 657 .41mag. I see a triangle of 3 dots very close together. The first one I had the glass came loose inside and rattled around. Sent it back. Got a new one in 5 weeks. Now this 3 dot deal. Any ideas? Maybe what I should be asking is, what would you buy for a hunting reddot? The gun shots real well. Maybe I should have spent a little more the  first time.

If I were to look at a red dot for hunting, I would consider 2 different ones.  First and my favorite is the Nikon Monarch Dot Sight.  It has a large FOV and is crystal clear.  Second, is the Burris SpeedDot. Very popular and very good for the money.

I personally have about zero experience with red dot sights. The idea of it just never has really appealed to me. Maybe partly because of the turn off factor from using one of the really early Aimpoint models.

BUT JD Jones of SSK fame has told me the red dots from the Ultra Dot/Micro Dot company are the best he has ever used. I never can keep it in my head which name is associated with the red dot and which with their lighted reticle scopes. I tested one of their scopes and I think that scope is now on my wife's shotgun which my oldest son seems to think is on permanent loan to him.    I hope it is at least as I have no clue where it is otherwise. At any rate I sure liked the scope and had it on my personal rifle a long time. JD says they are the toughest of the red dots and will hold up to more recoil. I dunno. I never tried one.

There's a new "red dot" scope company that's just being introduced and they will make their first appearance at the 2004 shot show in Las Vegas where they will introduce their entire line of red dot scopes. For now you can buy one of their entry level 3-9x40's but they will have much higher end scopes out soon. Their websites are www.muelleroptics.com and www.reddotscopes.com

I have one of their demo 4-16x50's mounted on my rifle and it will blow any $200 red dot scope on the market away. The clairity would be comparable to a Weaver grand slam and  with all the unique features and options you just cant touch another for the price.

Thanks for the info codybear.  I went and checked out the sight only to see the order number is in my area code.  Hmmm... they're in Johannesburg!

I'll have to check in with them as I'm in Lewiston a couple of times every month.  Looks like they are making some nice products at reasaonable prices.
