Rate the ATR 100
« on: July 07, 2010, 08:45:18 AM »
A couple years back Guns & Ammo rated the Savage Stevens 200 and the ATR 100, they gave the Stevens a little higher grade, other than the Trigger, this is a problem with both rifles, what do you like or dis-like about the ATR 100, I own two of the Stevens, But know nothing about the ATR,  my Nephew needs a Rifle this year and the New ATRs have Mossbergs version of the Accu-trigger. we are still kicking around what to get him.

I was in the market for a couple 243s for the grandsons and my buddys gunshop was closing and he gave me a hell of a deal on a atr and a stevens 200 in 243. the deal was so good i also bought an atr in 06. Looking at the three rifles id have to say that the savage seems a bit better fit and finished. Triggers on all three are crap but what do you expect for that ammount of money. I havent shot the 243s yet but the 06 is a real shooter. It will do an inch or less at a 100 yards with loads it likes. I bought it mostly for a truck gun and to shoot up a bunch of military ball ammo that was given to me. It fits the bill for those purposes. Neihter of them are guns id be likely to show up to elk camp with but for half the price of most bolt guns and for less money then a guy can buy a 3030 winchester these days there a hell of a bang for the buck. Both are now available with a decent trigger which is well worth a few more bucks. A guy has to keep in mind that not everybody is a gun nut like me and alot of guys are very happy with a buget rifle. I know that back when i was my grandsons age i would have been awful proud to have one.

Thanks Lloyd
On the Savage you can get the trigger fixed at a gunsmith or fix it your self, My first Stevens 200 had a bad Trigger, it cost me $20.00 to fix it, I called the Gunsmith, to check the price in looking for a new one, He now wants $40.00. But awhile back there was a guy on one of the forms that was selling lighter piano wire springs to lighten them up.
Last I checked Savage was not putting the Accu-trigger on the Stevens or the Edge, and the Edge is a totally different trigger group than the Stevens. From what I have read online, to fix the Edge, its $80.00 plus fitting by a Gunsmith.
So far I have found out.
There are 4 decent price Starter rifles, but all have their own problems.
Savage Stevens may have bad trigger, Fix $40,00
Savage Edge may have Bad trigger , fix $80.00 plus fitting
Marlin X rifle, this one has the Accu-trigger, but the gun shop I go too, said that Rem, bought Marlin out, and no more will be made till some time next year,
And lastly the. Mossberg 100 ATR that I know nothing about..

Scroll down on the Mossberg page a little and you will see the thread re my ATR 270.  When I first got it I had some trouble finding ammo it liked.  I started loading for it and the groups went sub MOA out to 350 yards.  I took the trigger apart and replaced the spring with a lighter one out of a pen, some very minor opening of the boss was all it took.

My wife has a Stevens .243 and it is a good gun as well.  Put a Sharp Shooter Supply trigger in it and that helped a lot.  It shoots factory ammo just fine.

Both are decent hunting rifles for a good price.  I really like my ATR but if you don't handload I would lean toward the Stevens.

I reload, but this Rifle will be for my brothers boy, I own two of the Stevens, A 308 and just got a 22-250, The 308 had the trigger problem, but the 22-250 is no worse than any of my older rifles, I want my brother to take the boy to a Gun show and find what he likes, not buy there just look, everyone is different, when I bought the 2nd Stevens, I looked at the Edge, I know a lot of guys like it, I was not one of them, it just did not feel right to me. Like I said I know nothing about the new 100 ATR, I have had a couple Mossberg shotguns I really liked, and an old Lever action that was a 336 knock off, I wish I would have kept, I replaced it with a Marlin 336, Great rifle but the Mossberg was a little unique.
I am just trying to get as much information together as possible be for we take him rifle shopping, If for me I would just get another Stevens, I reload all Hornady Bullets and push these two a 55gr, in the .224 and a 150 gr, in .308 with Varget and get very satisfying results.

Remington did buy Marlin, but there are still plenty of Marlin XL7 or XS7's for sale. As far as them not making more until next year, I think that is strictly here say. I would choose the Stevens over the Mossber, as the Mossberg is just a relabeled Raptor form a few years back.

I had my FFL and bought one of the Raptors when they came out, man that was a weird stock on them. I also have a Mossberg 100 ATR with the lightening trigger and barrel flutes. It is finished a lot better than the Raptor and my ATR is about twice as accurate as my Raptor was. I sold it and never looked back. The only thing I really don't like on the ATR is the bolt shroud with that lump on the left but the trigger is very nice.
